Lucia Harper portrayed by Joan Bennett has the most important role to play in the narrative, Martin Donnelly aka James Mason would be just a supporting presence, when set against the mother and wife that dominates the scene, she has all the virtues of an Übermensch and more, courage, resilience, altruism

Indeed, all the character strengths https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/flourish-by-martin-seligman.html identified by Martin Seligman, the co-founder of Positive Psychology, are present humanity, transcendence, temperance, wisdom, justice, courage, all with their single features: love, hope, etc.

 

Lucia Harper has to manage her household alone, although she has the important help of the black maid, who would offer emotional support, even literal, at various Reckless Moments, when there is danger, tension, drama, which is for most of the time – the husband is away, he even travels to Germany at some stage

We learn from the psychology classic The Female Brain https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/08/the-female-brain-by-louann-brizendine.html by Louann Brizendine that the Female Brain is different, they have areas that are much more important, the comparison was the Chicago Airport for women and some airfield in a village for men

 

Notwithstanding this aspect, the heroine in this oeuvre has all the qualities – I have to repeat this, she is braver than any man – she tries to protect her daughter, Beatrice aka Bea, from the vile tentacles of this fortune hunter- the girl is only seventeen, and this former inmate, who seems to be decades older, tries to elope with her

This Ted Darby wants money, when the mother comes to see him, to keep him away from Bea, he says there is a price, so she informs the daughter, and the teenager has a confrontation, and she pushed this abuser, kicked him, and then he falls down on an anchor, the following morning, Lucia Harper finds the dead body on the beach

 

Games People Play https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/games-people-play-by-eric-berne.html is another psychology classic, this time, it is a blackmailing game that turns around, and changes into something else, it might be facetious, but I will refrain from saying what happens and where does Martin Donnelly fit into all this

  In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin In The Fade has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, although in this cinephile's opinion, Una Mujer Fantastica- which has won the Oscar in the same category- Nelyubov or The Square would have been better choices. Having said that, Auf Dem Nichts is a very good, significant, remarkable feature, that attracts attention to violence against minorities, in this case the Kurdish community in Germany. It is therefore not one sided, we do not have only Muslim lunatics killing innocent "infidels", but also some extreme Europeans murdering the other side. The problem is that, unacceptable, horrifying and vile as these acts are, it appears that the overwhelming majority of atrocities are committed by zealots acting in the name of Islam- radical and unrepresentative as they are for this supposedly peaceful faith, although there are passages in its holy book that seem to insist on a violent jihad and ultimat...
