The Pledge https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/the-pledge-by-friedrich-durrenmatt-nine.html by Friedrich Durrenmatt is one of
The 1,000 Novels Everyone Must Read, adapted for the big screen by Sean Penn,
as director, and starring Jack Nicholson in the leading role, a very unusual
presence at that, a challenge
This author has
some very unusual oeuvres, and Die Panne aka A Dangerous Game is one of three
that I have now listened to, or read, the protagonist, Alfredo Traps, is a
travelling salesman https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/10/death-of-salesman-by-arthur-miller.html Death of A Salesman comes to mind
For some
reason, which I will not reveal, unless of course, you write and ask me about
it – you, the hypothetical man, or woman, as in the scene in the amphitheater
in Monty Python’s Life of Brian, perhaps the best comedy ever made, who is
still reading this – Arthur Miller’s shadow is hanging over this quite
terrifying story
Alfredo
Traps has a flat tire, and he ends up spending the night as a guest, and then
he is invited to join this quite peculiar, to use a euphemism, game with the
hosts https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/games-people-play-by-eric-berne.html they want to put the guest…on trial
Why not, I
look around these days – spoiler alert, this is the time when I forget myself
and tell you stories you don’t want to hear, so maybe you should say goodbye
now – and wonder how terrible I could be, in the past, I have read that the reason
we have to believe the others are rational, is to look at their actions, and
see they resemble what we do
Ergo, they
must have reason, for we do the things we do, prompted by a process of thinking,
however, so many crazies utter nonsense, that I must think about myself https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/if-by-rudyard-kipling-one-of-most.html If by Rudyard Kipling has a
different interpretation for a comedian
The hosts
make a strong case, it seems that Alfredo Traps has some dark secrets, and they
act in what looks to me like the manner of the retired judge in And Then There
Were None by Agatha Christie, this self-appointed vigilante gathers together
10, including himself, suspects, people accused of heinous acts, murder, to be
exact
One by one https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/and-then-there-were-none-by-agatha.html those accused of murder are…killed,
because the judge is sure they had been guilty, and thus he has a duty to be
the instrument of justice, though we could be sophists and say, yes, but those
he murders may have had the same belief
The
personages in A Dangerous Game come to the same conclusion, that the visitor
must be punished, and severely, let us keep the secret, albeit I do not see how
anybody could still follow this, so far, and then there is https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-old-ladys-visit-by-friedrich.html another play, with another outré
plot, by the same author, and now, I will end this note with self-promotion,
