As Good As It Gets written by Mark Andrus and James Brooks, directed by the latter was the 1998 Winner of The Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role, for Jack Nicholson, and The Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Helen Hunt took this one; here is the link to my blog, for more notes on films and books, and my macaws https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/08/do-you-have-any-suggestions-how-to-make.html

8 out of 10

Jack Nicholson https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/12/a-few-good-men-directed-by-late.html is one of my favorite thespians, winner of three Oscars, though he has one for the supporting role in A Few Good Men, whereas Daniel Day Lewis has three Academy Awards, all for leading roles, not that this is an issue on which to compare them

He is the freak at the center of the plot, a hypochondriac with an attitude problem, obnoxious, at least to begin with, arrogant, demanding, he only wants this waitress to serve in the restaurant where he eats, does not touch handles, or anything, he uses protection, so that he does not get in touch with any germs, or people

Helen Hunt https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/09/pay-it-forward-by-catherine-ryan-hyde.html is Carol Connelly, the waitress that has to put up with all the shenanigans, the idiocrasies of Melvin Udall aka Jack Nicholson, alas, I cannot stand this artist, she is the epitome of artificiality, falseness, and thus I avoid her films

Even As Good As It Gets suffered because of her presence, from my perspective, evidently, otherwise, she was given the trophy for best actress in a leading role, which is enough proof of what most, at least in Hollywood, thought about her performance, which makes me think of a…poem, by Rudyard Kipling, who was once a celebrity

https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/if-by-rudyard-kipling-one-of-most.html “If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you” this was switched around by a comedian, who concludes in a stand-up number that if that happens to you, then you should see a doctor…

ergo, if only I keep blaming Helen Hunt, it is my fault, a ‘friend of ours’, which sounds to me as coming from a gangster movie, where this ‘friend’ is a made guy, a Goodfella, keeps joking that ‘next week we will go and see an analyst’, meaning I have to see one, which I did, I had a love affair with Miss Romania, and when it ended, I went mad

not that I am much better, speaking of which, Harvard Professor Tal Ben Shahar https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/03/the-pursuit-of-perfect-by-tal-ben-shahar.html had the most popular lectures in the history of Harvard, The Positive Psychology course, and he quoted from As Good As It Gets

Melvin Udall, after starting as a sort of primordial Orange Plague (MAGA leader), gets soft, and then says: ‘you make me want to be a better man’, which Professor Shahar said is the best declaration of love, or at least this is how I remember it; this is better though https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/the-sonnets-by-shakespeare-is-supposed.html

Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice written by Larry Tucker and Paul Mazursky, directed by the latter is included on The New York Times’ Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made list, and Variety has published recently its Top 100 Comedies – or else, I have learned about this lately – where this feature has a top spot, as far as I remember it is higher that the 50th spot – speaking of these pages, you have access to my own more than five thousand notes on films from these and other compilations, together with another five thousand reviews on magnum opera from The Greatest Books of All Time and other sites on my blog and You Tube channel https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/do-you-have-any-feedback.html you may even subscribe, if you wish

In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin

In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin In The Fade has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, although in this cinephile's opinion, Una Mujer Fantastica- which has won the Oscar in the same category- Nelyubov or The Square would have been better choices. Having said that, Auf Dem Nichts is a very good, significant, remarkable feature, that attracts attention to violence against minorities, in this case the Kurdish community in Germany. It is therefore not one sided, we do not have only Muslim lunatics killing innocent "infidels", but also some extreme Europeans murdering the other side. The problem is that, unacceptable, horrifying and vile as these acts are, it appears that the overwhelming majority of atrocities are committed by zealots acting in the name of Islam- radical and unrepresentative as they are for this supposedly peaceful faith, although there are passages in its holy book that seem to insist on a violent jihad and ultimat...
