Americanah by Chimamanda Adichie is ranked 436th on The Greatest Books of All Time site; in 2024, it was ranked 27th in The New York Times' list of 100 best books of the 21st century. In 2022, Americanah was banned in the Clay County School District in Florida, I was not overwhelmed by it, though I would have enjoyed it more, if I knew about the MAGA ban

This is one
of the best books of this century, 27th to be precise, according to
The New York Times, though some books listed as the best https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/sticks-exhortation-by-george-saunders.html such as Tenth of December, have been
enchanting, others, not so much, Ferrante became a disappointment for the under
signed
"Americanah"
is Lagosian slang for "Nigerians newly returned after a spell
Stateside", hence the title, I must say here that I was captivated by the
book, did not give it the whole attention, skipped some passages, 477 pages
seemed a lot, and the distance shown here surely demonstrates many, maybe most
of the points made by the author
Criticism of
America, whites, WASP, and other proves now to have been prescient, Chimamanda
Ngozi Adichie published this in 2013, and in the book we have Obama, his
campaign, speech after the crisis with his pastor, analyses of Michele Obama,
the situation before the Orange Plague has hit USA and the world with such
force https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/seth-meyers-is-intelligent-amusing.html
Ifemelu is
arguably (or without a doubt) the main character of the oeuvre, in love with
Obinze, who is of paramount importance, but still overshadowed by the woman who
fits the Americanah definition, she went to America, and then returned to
Nigeria, we find her opinions on race, what happened in the US at that time
I found most
of what she writes very close to what I think, albeit, as mentioned before, idiosyncrasies
also prove she is right in criticizing the attitudes of whites, who say that Westerners
brought progress to Africa, which is what I still tend to maintain, however
shaken that idea has become, however, I do not ignore the massacres
https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-poisonwood-bible-by-barbara.html Poisonwood Bible was more effective
in creating a truer image of what the whites have done in Africa,
notwithstanding the fact that it mostly takes place in the Congo, and it was a
much more exhilarating read, perhaps because it was in print, and I listened to
the audiobook Americanah
there was a moment
when I thought I will abandon reading, it is nearly half way into the novel,
Obinze has travelled to England, where he has to take a cleaning, and other
menial jobs, one day, there is a human excretion on the seat of the toilet he
was supposed to take away, the situation is described with too much detail, for
my taste
The Heart of
The Matter https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/08/the-heart-of-matter-by-graham-greene.html a magnum opus which is one of my
favorites is mentioned a few times, Obinze’s mother, quite a character, has
been reading this book by Graham Greene multiple times, and then under this
guidance, Ifemelu reads it too…I changed my ‘advertising’, and placed it at the
end, instead of upfront, here it is:
