Molesworth https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/08/down-with-skool-by-geoffrey-willans.html is another book by Ronald Searle, written with Geoffrey Willans, which is included on the 1,000 Novels Everyone Must Read list, I have read two parts, and I still have the third and last, except the enthusiasm has diminished

 

The jokes, drawings are not bad, but they appear somewhat lame, take this one in which a man cancels his trip to Venice, on the phone and we see his bathroom in the background, and the fact that he has plumbing issues, ergo a little lagoon is about to be created at home, why bother to go all the way to Italy for water

Humor is crucial; indeed, it is one of the ten ingredients of Positivity https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/positivity-by-barbara-fredrickson-life.html which is the name of the classic by Barbara Fredrickson, the others would be awe, interest, inspiration, hope, pride, serenity, joy, gratitude and love

 

Another page in Hurrah for St Trinian’s has this stage, on which we have an actor, with some laurels on his head, who says: ‘Quick! What do I say now? Veni vidi something…’ he has forgotten this famous line, Caesar has arrived at this place and said veni, vidi, vici, I came, I saw, I won, or conquered, laconic and very efficient

I admire another kind of humor, the one that is so exhilarating in the magnum opera of Kingsley Amis, one of the latest reads for the second time has this cheater arguing with…God, and other personages https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/06/one-fat-englishman-by-kingsley-amis-is.html he wants absolution, and many dispensations

 

‘It was not until several weeks after he had decided to murder his wife that Dr Bickleigh took any active steps in the matter.’ This is the first, overwhelming line in a favorite book, and this combines jesting with a dramatic act, we are told who the murderer is and we know the victim, what is left in the book to find, we wonder

Malice Aforethought https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/05/malice-aforethought-by-anthony-berkeley.html is one of the best mystery oeuvres, indeed, one of the great chefs d’oeuvre in general, I was thinking that although it is a murder ‘mystery’, it is also very amusing, the ‘mystery’ would be how related to the way the act is committed

 

Evelyn Waugh is another phenomenal author, although as a human being he was a snob, and quite obnoxious we find, but take Black Mischief https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/08/black-mischief-by-evelyn-waugh-10-out.html and the idea that they did not know if one observation was alright, or it might be takes as an affront towards the wife of the tribe chieftain

  In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin In The Fade has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, although in this cinephile's opinion, Una Mujer Fantastica- which has won the Oscar in the same category- Nelyubov or The Square would have been better choices. Having said that, Auf Dem Nichts is a very good, significant, remarkable feature, that attracts attention to violence against minorities, in this case the Kurdish community in Germany. It is therefore not one sided, we do not have only Muslim lunatics killing innocent "infidels", but also some extreme Europeans murdering the other side. The problem is that, unacceptable, horrifying and vile as these acts are, it appears that the overwhelming majority of atrocities are committed by zealots acting in the name of Islam- radical and unrepresentative as they are for this supposedly peaceful faith, although there are passages in its holy book that seem to insist on a violent jihad and ultimat...
