10 out of 10
I have read
Live Flesh https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/06/live-flesh-by-ruth-rendell-is-one-of.html by Ruth Rendell and did not like it,
so now I have to wonder why, since Judgement In Stone was fabulous, it creates
a problem for the next read, which is Sacred Hunger, by Barry Unsworth, I have
enjoyed his Morality Play
It is quite surprising
– now that I have written this, I realize that I have disagreed with many
rankings lately – to see that Judgment in Stone is only 1324th on
The Greatest Books of All Time site – this is one of the best books I have read
lately, it kept me connected, waiting to see what happens, although we know
from the start…
No need for
a spoiler alert, but you may assume there is one, just in case, I have had some
MAGA complaints, members of the cult of the Orange Fool, it may even be the
reason why I was banned for some time, they disliked by own disgust with that
Goodfella https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/08/goodfellas-based-on-book-by-nicholas.html who has made billions while in the
highest office
First, Ruth
Rendell tells us that the Coverdale family is killed, well, the father, his
wife, and two children, the latter are nearly adults, then, I realized I saw
the spectacular La Ceremonie, directed by Claude Chabrol, and with magnificent
Isabelle Huppert in one of the leading roles, I must see it again, and then I
will post a note on it
Eunice is
this terrible woman who is hired as maid by Jacqueline Coverdale, without
knowing her gruesome past – she had killed her father, she is illiterate, now,
the last part is just very inconvenient, if not disqualifying, but being a
killer, would be reason to stay away, and then there are instances when the
tragedy could be avoided
Indeed, I
keep referring to Malice Aforethought https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/05/malice-aforethought-by-anthony-berkeley.html where we have the same outstanding
introduction, the first line tells readers who are the killer and the victim, in
Judgement in Stone, we are told periodically that the outcome could have been
avoided
For
instance, Melinda Coverdale has to decide if she joins her boyfriend, maybe I
should say lover, or she would stay at home, one choice is a dead end – what
grated me somewhat, in what is anyway a perfect oeuvre, was the insistence with
which we were told that Eunice hated the printed word, then maybe there is
something else…
To have one
crazy woman is feasible, but to get the two together seemed a bit against the
odds, they are psychopaths, and meet in this village, for the definition of
psychopath I think of Tal Ben Shahar https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/03/the-pursuit-of-perfect-by-tal-ben-shahar.html this is one of my Top 200 Favorite
Books now
