Let me use a
sound bite: I see Henry VIII as a sort of predecessor of The Orange ‘Abrascam’
(as Jimmy Kimmel called him) except in this motion picture, Henry VIII was
amusing, although keeping things in proportion this modern day Caligula has not
killed wives, just divorced two (maybe more in the future) even if he is
responsible for many deaths
The other
king that comes to mind is Richard III https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/richard-iii-by-william-shakespeare.html who has been rehabilitated, they
have found his remains in a parking lot, they made a film about it, called The
Lost King, I could check the name, but then it was not such a great feature
What is
marvelous is this book by Josephine Tey, The Daughter of Time, which is
included in some of the most prestigious lists of the best Mystery books and
The 1,000 Novels Everyone Must Read, and it looks at the myth of Richard III,
debunking the notion that he killed those children https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-daughter-of-time-by-josephine-fey.html he was actually a good monarch
Henry VIII
is infamous – Kingsley Amis wrote about this word saying that the misuse had
made it taboo, people do not have the sense of what it means – for marrying and
then killing a few wives, although in this motion picture they take a lighter
tone, and say that one was stupid, another one had another shortcoming
Because the
one making these statements is also a woman, maybe we should not call it misogynistic…even
if his majesty clearly was, if one who kills women is not, then I do not know
who is…there is another story https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/the-other-boleyn-girl-based-on-novel-by.html
The Other
Boleyn Girl, and plenty more which looked at this imposing figure, indeed,
Henry VIII was even physically impressive: in the film, they make fun at the
notion that his last spouse was domineering and prevented him from eating and
drinking (too much) and he says ‘the best was the worst’, presumably of the
wives
He did not
have the chance to read The Seven Principles of Making Marriage Work https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/03/the-seven-principles-of-making-marriage.html a classic of psychology today, the
author, John Gottman, should have advised his royal highness, although not
killing your partners should be common sense
Furthermore,
King Henry VIII separated more than a few marriages, The Anglican Church was
born because he did not get an annulment from the pope, in the Catholic church,
one is united for ever https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/05/12-steps-to-compassion-by-karen.html he was a sinister character, if
amusing in this feature
