The Story of G.I. Joe by Leopold Atlas, Guy Endore and Philip Stevenson was nominated for four Academy Awards in 1946, including for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Robert Mitchum, and also for Best Writing, Screenplay; it is also one of The New York Times’ Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made – you have thousands of notes on films from the NYT 1,000 and other lists on my blog https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/do-you-have-any-feedback.html and YouTube channel, where my macaws have their own say

8 out of 10
This made me
think of All Quiet on The Western Front https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/12/all-quiet-on-western-front-by-erich.html maybe the best book on war, adapted
for the big screen, the early version became one of The GOAT, and the more
recent version is outstanding as well, it was nominated for the Oscars a few
years ago
The Story of
G.I. Joe is about the valor, determination, resilience, patriotism, bravery of
those who fought in World War II, in particular, this describes the battle at Monte
Casino, in Italy, where general Montgomery (I hope it was him, and I am not
making a mistake) ordered the bombing of the historical, cultural site
In fairness,
he said something to the effect of ‘if my soldiers are dying, then I rather
bomb a historical building and save them’ it is a compelling story, it was a
‘biggie’, as the Orange American Psycho called it https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/04/american-psycho-by-bret-easton-ellis.html recently, when talking about his war
There are
emotional passages in The Story of G.I. Joe, such as the father who receives
from his wife a recording with the voices of his children – or was it just one?
– only he does not have anything to listen to this, so he tries to find
something and asks the natives, the Italians, and they are faced with a communication
breakdown
It is
amusing: he shows the spinning of a phonograph, it gets to be a game of Charade
https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/01/from-list-of-1000-novels-everyone-must.html the locals bring some sort of mixer,
then he sings, and what do you think? They sing along with him, they do not get
it
Later, he
would find the proper device…spoiler alert – some will die, even from the ranks
of those we get attached to, there is a Pulitzer Prize winner, and he is asked
by his comrades if he had met stars of the silver screen, if they look just as
glamorous as they seem, there is a difference between those thespians and the ones
of today
The Pulitzer
Prize winner made me think of Magister Ludi Kingsley Amis https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/the-letters-of-kingsley-amis-edited-by.html who said ‘‘In 1986, I won the Booker
Prize for Fiction with my novel The Old Devils. With that substantial
exception, I found the occasion of the award a horrid one.”
We now have
the war in Iran hanging upon us, though we must think of those who have to face
bombings and stop lamenting, which I do, condemning that Orange Caligula, The
Confidence Man https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/confidence-man-making-of-donald-trump.html roasted by King Charles III over the
last few days
