While both the book and the film are interesting, these lines will be more about how the American Psycho has metamorphosed into The Orange Lunatic (to use a word he likes to throw at his opponents, who are otherwise thousands of times saner than he is)  https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/05/american-psycho-by-bret-easton-ellis-9.html - this is my other take on the novel

 

When I say American Psycho, I now think of the Mad Man – not one of the mesmerizing ones from the outstanding series Mad Men – who has launched the war in Iran (unless he was pushed into it by Bibi Netanyahu) and has no idea what he wants to do with it, he insults allies, calls them, then he does not need them…

Britain has a ‘toy navy’ anyway, it is such a crazy display that you would not believe it in a comedy: one day he has won, the same one, but in the evening he is sending marines in, he admires Putin and company, the tyrants (for he wants to be one), and humiliates allies, the attack on Zelensky was disgusting, and he keeps on it

It is also true that he is a symptom, the correlation and/or causation question is more complex, at least for me: he was elected, ergo the hoi polloi identify with this ultimate scoundrel, not all, but a majority in the US, and populists are gaining in so many places – somebody told me yesterday that they will get 80% here

 

Thus, if people want this type of ghoul to be in charge – one argument I heard quite a lot is ‘you would do it in his place’, and yes, ‘power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely’, but I do not see myself aspiring to be like that, which what so many do, they are horrible, and only lack the power to inflict ‘maximum lethality’, as that other idiot, Hegseth, keeps screaming – then we can only expect the disastrous results
