This was some very good entertainment, furthermore, Austin Butler seems to be on the way to become one of my favorite thespians https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/01/elvis-and-me-true-story-of-love-between.html he certainly has charm, talent, an easy going way, inspiration, he can be funny and take on drama

 

He has the leading role of Hank Thompson in this tragicomedy, he falls in the middle of what they might call a clusterfuck: his neighbor, Russ aka formidable Matt Smith, leaves his cat in his care, Matt has a huge, colored punk hairdo, and a bizarre, mirthful style, except under this appearance, there is a serious problem

Some Russian mobsters come looking for Hank, in fact, they want the drugs they think he has, the key to the storage – Russ is a drug dealer, and has had a connection with this violent underworld, only his neighbor has nothing to do with all this, he is an innocent victim – and they beat him up when he does not deliver

 

This reminds me of Anora https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/11/anora-written-directed-produced-edited.html Winner of Best Picture last year – it was in 2025, wasn’t it? -there are similarities and differences, in Anora, I thought that the Russian goons were too silly to be credible, in Caught Stealing, they mean business

Incidentally, two years in a row I disagree with the awards, I was all on board with Oppenheimer https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/02/oppenheimer-is-fabulous-glasperlenspiel.html in 2024, neither Anora, nor One Battle After Another convinced me, I would have opted for another winner, the fabulous Blue Moon

 

Ethan Hawke would have received the top prize, if they had asked me, Bobby Cannavale for supporting role, Richard Linklater for director and script, though I admire Paul Thomas Anderson, but much more for Boogie Nights and Magnolia, again Blue Moon  https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/12/blue-moon-written-by-lorenz-hart-robert.html has my votes

hank has to try to survive, his girlfriend is killed by two Hasidic gangsters – Live Schreiber and Vincent D’Onofrio are outstanding in these roles – and here we have a gruesome act, as these two combine humor with horror – indeed, it again brings to mind something else – Good Luck, Don’t Die, Have Fun, a recent release

 

throughout some serious trouble, Austin Butler is detached, serene at times, he keeps his charisma, and makes the movie work, in my view, again, I like this actor and look forward to see him again, Insha’Allah, in some parts that are worth his time and ours, in retrospect, Elvis was quite good, I did not pay it all the needed attention alas

  In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin In The Fade has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, although in this cinephile's opinion, Una Mujer Fantastica- which has won the Oscar in the same category- Nelyubov or The Square would have been better choices. Having said that, Auf Dem Nichts is a very good, significant, remarkable feature, that attracts attention to violence against minorities, in this case the Kurdish community in Germany. It is therefore not one sided, we do not have only Muslim lunatics killing innocent "infidels", but also some extreme Europeans murdering the other side. The problem is that, unacceptable, horrifying and vile as these acts are, it appears that the overwhelming majority of atrocities are committed by zealots acting in the name of Islam- radical and unrepresentative as they are for this supposedly peaceful faith, although there are passages in its holy book that seem to insist on a violent jihad and ultimat...
