The Manager of The Kremlin by Evelyn Waugh
The Manager of The Kremlin by Evelyn Waugh
Russia and The Kremlin is particular are not popular in the world, even if Putin enjoys a popularity among his people of 80%. I love their culture, the borzoi but I hate their politics: I thought it funny to read a story about The Manager of Kremlin, with an invading Russian army, not that far from our border.
Boris is the main character in this story and he fought against the Bolsheviks, he met a French officer, with whom he could get along. As we know from the works of Tolstoy, Turgenev and other Great Russian writers, the nobles spoke better French than their mother tongue, they wrote it better. It took two years for Boris to reach Paris, they had to sell jewelry.
The Russian came very near starvation, trying all kinds of jobs- chauffer, dance partner and more.
With 30 shillings in his pocket, this true aristocrat decides to treat himself o a very good meal. He ordered caviar, champagne, cigars and he knew all the most exquisite food and drinks.
Boris meets his French friend who is astonished at the extravagance of eating such an expensive meal, when you have only a few francs in the world.
After this lunch, Boris becomes the manager of the Kremlin- the restaurant, not Putin’s outfit.
I love the novels and short stories of Evelyn Waugh, who was a fabulous writer.
