Little Speck in Garnered Fruit by O’Henry
Absolutely fabulous- 10 out of 10
It is so stupendous to read and find new wonderful writers.
Only last year- I think- I knew nothing about Flannery O’Connor, Jean Stafford, Bernard Malamud, O’Henry and this is naming just a few.
In the meantime, these fantastic writers have become favorite creators.
O’Henry has been encountered by the undersigned in a collection of 50 American funny writers and he is hilarious.
I have written a few lines on the story of the kid who is kidnapped and then with a Stockholm syndrome in reverse he becomes the torturer of his jailors.
Now I am off for a joy ride, with a collection of O’Henry stories to provide a honeymoon like experience.
“The honeymoon was at its full”
This is the start of this story which quickly moves into humorous territory:
- „Neither of them had ever seen a yellow primrose by the river's brim; but if such a sight had met their eyes at that time it would have seemed like--well, whatever the poet expected the right kind of people to see in it besides a primrose.”
It is also true that you may not find these lines uproariously funny, but I do-
- The bride wants a peach, and the very idea seems for some reason humorous
It may be because I expect laughter from O’Henry or/and his way of emphasizing the absurd or just the plain ordinary.
Gotta da peach?" asked the Kid in the tongue of Dante, the lover of lovers.
"Ah, no,--" sighed the vender. "Not for one mont com-a da peach. Too soon. Gotta da nice-a orange. Like-a da orange?"
So the groom has problems in finding a peach
Vendors keep offering oranges.
So much so that he says at point
- If anybody oranges me again tonight I’ll knock his lights out.
Oh, I did not mention that the groom is a boxing champion, who gets into a fight for the peach wanted by his damsel in distress.
And she is kind of upset, when she observes the long time it takes for her worldwide famous boxer to get a lousy peach
The kid has to get the police involved in some convoluted way into his search for The Holy Grail aka the peach.
I will not say what happens except that I greatly enjoyed it.
