La Mere Sauvage by Guy de Maupassant

Revenge – An Eye for an Eye

“You Can’t Handle The Truth’ the memorable line from A Few Good Men

PTSD & PTG

This is a sublime little story, although it left me in a bit of a quandary.

The story per se is not to be found on goodreads- or at least I had no success when searching for it. So I have the options of attaching it to other stories or create a new entry. I chose the former.

Because it is a very short story, finished in less than 16 minutes- I listened to an audio reading which has the minutes on the screen- how can one note about it, without giving in details of the story?

A spoiler alert would be in order: 1) I am not sure if I disclose anything, 2) at this stage I am not sure how much this note will be about the story- I will probably digress.

The language is beautiful. It sounds amazing …awesome. I watch standup on Comedy Central, where this guy was making fun on something I also noticed; the sickening use of awesome, in comments, online, on TV.

In my country everybody uses super…super chick (most often I hear that in the sauna, from fitness addicts to gang members- yes, we have that in the second most exquisite fitness club of Bucharest – they use most of the time…super…super workout, super boobs, super sex and along these lines; I ‘ll spare you more details)

Super is good though, even when used ad nauseam/ it is positive and may make for a better mindset.

Coming back to La Mere Sauvage…

She suffers a trauma and to take a cynical, with a very doubtful humorous look – she did not have A Strategy for Coping, for that would be written much later, in sunny California.

She is kind to the Prussian soldiers that are sent to her home, until disaster strikes. She receives bad news from the front and all her world is changed.

As I advance I am thinking that I could still reveal more- for a possible reader is not looking to read something about this story here. My “review „is placed in the wrong place:

-          You can’t just say;

-          Oh man! To Hell with it, you spoiled my planned reading

-          You were not going to read La Mere, while looking for other stories

-          But let’s just finish this dialogue here, ok?

-          You win

I’ll forget about the end and I’ll just say that this is where all the action is. At the end, everything gets really hot- action, reaction, fireworks and all.

I am wondering if it was to be expected…I don’t know...the very fact that I am wondering about it makes for a plain answer: I did not this is going to end like this.

For even now, with hindsight I am confused.

The old woman suffers what would later be called shell shock or PTSD – post traumatic stress disorder.

After a trauma, some people fall apart.

Others experience PTG -Post Traumatic Growth.

It is for you to read this story and find out what happens.

You will defiantly be moved by it and I must say that though short, many such stories pack a heavy punch.

I was taken back man!!
