 Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward

Light comedy

When we learn that ghosts will be present in a story, we expect horror and gore.

Especially today, when the screens are assaulted by Supernatural, Twilight and other vampire, spirits and X men productions.

As may be obvious, I am not a fan of series or movies with weird creatures, be them werewolves, spider men or whatever.

There are a few exceptions.
I am thinking E.T. and Wolf, played by the supreme Jack Nicholson.

Blithe Spirit is not about aggressive, blood spilling ghosts.

Even if at one point, they break a vase or two.

It is all started by Charles Condomine who is a novelist.

He invites the medium and clairvoyant Madame Arcati to his house.
His intention is to find more about...

- The tricks of the trade and some expressions

He asks his wife, Ruth to refrain from laughing at the medium.

Madame Arcati takes her trade seriously.

She is asking for various conditions and details to be respected...
From the known table to the kind of tea.

I had a sort of encounter with a medium and the requests were similar.

Indeed, we have read about this in other stories.

What is unfamiliar here is that the tone is mocking, then it seems to get serious and again we laugh.

Elvira, the dead wife of the novelist comes from the Other World.

That sounds serious.
And for a while it is.

Poor Charles Condomine is in disarray.
He cancels the session abruptly and is further affected by the realization that only he can hear and see Elvira.

The humor, not exhilarating, is nevertheless amplified by a dialogue wherein Ruth thinks Charles is talking to her.

- Get away
Charles is telling Elvira, but Ruth is sure he is rude to her.

Shut up and others like this make the situation worse.

Elvira even plans some accidents, by placing grease in the wrong places and finally working on the car.
She wants her husband-that would be her ex-husband?- dead.
From affection...probably.
To join her Over to The Other Side.

But it does not happen as it had been planned.
