The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie
Who dunnit? You will never guess
Agatha Christie is one of the most popular writers in the world.
At one point, I think she held the record for the number of books sold, translations – one or both, I do not remember exactly.
And for good reason, because no matter if the reader is keen on detective stories one has to give Caesar what belongs to him.
She is the queen of the crime story genre, albeit some may favor Conan Doyle, Philip Marlowe and perhaps other writers.
I have seen a movie about a period in Agatha Christie’s life in which she was confused and went into retreat in a spa.
It is amazing how the writer could read so well into the mind of characters and especially the criminal type.
The plots are amazing and the Mousetrap is no exception.
In fact, the public has been in such awe that the play has been running continuously since it opened and this is yet another record.
It is the longest running show of any type in modern history, even if the author had given it in a letter only eight months to run on stage.
At the start of the play, at least in the version I heard, we meet Mollie Raston, married to Giles and together with him proprietor of Monkswell Manor.
This is a guesthouse where the Mice will be trapped by a killer that we won’t know until the end and you will find by reading the play.
A woman had been murdered, before the guests arrive and as a connection is made with a couple of children, who had been lost many years ago.
All the people who arrive at the Manor have a kind of connection with the murder and they could be either victims or the killer.
There is a song about three mice which gives an indication as to what is about to happen- one mouse is dead and two other will follow.
A policeman arrives on…skies, for the manor is isolated by snow and there are impediments caused by this extreme weather.
But apart from the weather, the villain is causing…mischief, what else?
He cuts the telephone wires and then the skies of the policeman are missing, with everybody under suspicion.
I will give away just one murder that takes place fast and this is an arrogant woman, who is fussy ever since she arrives at the guest house.
She turns out to have been the judge in the trial that gave away the orphaned children to a home where they would be abused.
There is also a notebook that gives away clues as to the whereabouts of the murderer and the policeman investigates the guests, one by one.
There is a major that I had suspected- Metcalf, but I have never been good at spotting the villain and the killer is a surprise.
I wonder if you will know who he or she is, before the finale
