The Falklands Play by Ian Curteis

The Falklands Play by Ian Curteis

A different version of this note and thoughts on other books are available at:

This is an excellent drama.
It depicts the real Falklands War.

And it is an excellent rendition of background, the political situation in Argentina and Great Britain and so much more.
Towering over all the events is

-          The Iron Lady.

In fact, because the play was considered too favorable to Margaret Thatcher, it was shelved for many years.
It was only produced for Radio and Television in 2002.

I have listened to the adaptation for BBC Radio.
And it must be stated that I am biased and all in favor of Britain.

My cousin, who is an Argentinian citizen now would surely disagree.
Nevertheless, I don't see why a group of islands would rather belong to one country, just because they are somewhat closer to it.

Besides, the islanders had been asked and they had been and still are in favor of being part of Great Britain and not Argentina.
In terms of history, there is none to speak of that would grant support to Argentinian claims.

And yet General Galtieri, the undemocratic ruler of Argentina decided to us military force to grab the islands...
They call them the Malvinas.

If unacceptable, it is understandable.
The junta had lead the country in a disastrous manner.

Opponents of the regime had been killed, thrown into the Ocean.
The economic situation was grave.

However, if they engage in a conflict that would make the population rally behind the leaders, that would be an escape.
And they took the opportunity even if the outcome was a catastrophe, as it is well known.

The reaction of the Iron Lady was magnificent.
Notwithstanding the fact that she knew the grave risks and the heavy responsibility, she proved she was

Brave, determined, resilient, decisive.

-          A real Superwoman.

To make matters worse, the great friends did not offer an unwavering support.
On the contrary, the efforts to mediate enraged The Iron Lady at times.

First of all, the Argentinians wee the aggressors.

Second, they had no real, legal or historical basis to claim the islands.

Third, they were actually a bunch of criminals, despots who had murdered many of their own compatriots.

There are many details that make this fascinating work a gripping story.
The members of the junta used to drink a lot, agree with a peace plan, only to reject all the propositions shortly afterwards, maybe when they sobered up a little.

The United Nations vote and political machinations are also included.
Before the vote, Jordan was considered an ally that would be on the side of Britain.

Minutes before the key event, there was a change that would cause Britain to lose the motion.
The position of some key players was:

Why all this fuss over some isolated, cold islands, at the end of the world.

Margaret Thatcher had the high moral ground.

She insisted that if this is allowed, dictators everywhere will get the message that they can grab what they want and nothing will happen to them.

I agree with her completely.
Even in the scenario wherein Argentina was right in claiming the islands, using force to grab them was inadmissible.

If we try an laugh at it, they did not even have the force, skill, preparation and training to take on the British force.
In one instance, they abandoned their own men in the sea, without any effort to save them.

Marvelous play and one of the greatest leaders of our world playing a crucial role in an outstanding victory.
