Love Story by Erich Segal

 Love Story by Erich Segal

Good, I remember I cried- 8 out of 10

I have just realized that I have read this book.

It was many years ago, maybe thirty, maybe thirty five.

Robert Evans, former head of Paramount and responsible for the movie version that became a huge success talks about it.

He is the author of an exciting book that I read now, called The Kid Stays in the Picture that has a passage on Love Story.

There are two things that I need to mention here-

-          First, amends are to be made for the really long  time that has passed, which means much of the plot is gone from the mind

-          Second, the notes would refer more to the movie story since these are the details which Evans has refreshed with his book.

After the alert connected to the time travel, it is all right to say that the plot of the movie is well known and déjà vu.

As a matter of fact, I guess both the book and the movie adaption have suffered a –perhaps deserved- decline.

Yes it is heartbreaking to read about a young girl in love, happy and bright that is struck by a deadly disease.

But neither the book nor the movie version is really so good as to be worth the singing praises that they received in 1970.

In a strange coincidence, the actress in the lead role, Ali MacGraw became very ill, after she played in Love Story.

She was the wife of the above mentioned Robert Evans and a very good actress and an exquisite human being.

It is true that I have read through The Kid Stays in the Picture only up to the stage where Evans and MacGraw are still together.

From what I know, she would get involved with Steve McQueen and when the story gets there, I wonder how her portrait will change.

The really bad guy in Love Story is Ryan O’Neill.

He had the lead male part, although the director would not have him and behaved in a despicable manner.

Not only he showed no emotion when he was called by Robert Evans to say that his wife is very ill and might lose the baby, but acted even worse.

Ryan O’Neill offered no sympathy, refused to attend the event for the movie that would boost his career.

He received an Oscar nomination for his part, but never once called to ask about the health of his partner or her baby.

Not to mention any thank you.

Both the movie and the book enjoyed immense success, albeit it was hard for Evans to get the film off the ground.

Which happened again with The Godfather, which, although one of the five best movies of all time, was refused by many big names

The most famous line from Love Story became:

-          In love never say I’m sorry

Which sounds pretty silly to me now, I can’t remember what it sounded like thirty years ago.
