The Augustine notebooks and Kindling by Raymond Carver

The Augustine Notebooks

I am not even sure what this is.
When I tried to look it up on the internet, there was practically nothing.

So it could be an idea, or the start of a novel, perhaps a short story that is not included in the established collections…
Or maybe the novel fragment that is mentioned on the web, but I did not find anything more about it…yet.

Nevertheless, the account is short and quite…hot.
The couple that lives on the Greek island of Rhodes does not seem to be too close, in the first part, when they argue.

The man says that he does not think they have too many chances.
And he has shaking hands, maybe from too much drinking.

The only other day that is mentioned in the material that I listened to has a different outlook, with sex scenes.
I was amazed to listen to the word “cock” mentioned here.

And not just that, but there is an erection and the man and the woman are engaged in a very charged sexual game.

-          Let me say hello to the “little fellow”
-          Oh…he is not that little
-          Don’t move…don’t move…

Apparently, the end of this interchange is felatio.

Kindling

This is definitely a short story and it was included and published in Call If You Need Me (2000) and
Collected Stories (2009).
The hero is Myers and he is a recovering alcoholic.

His wife has eloped with another alcoholic.
So Myers decides to change scenery and I am supposing his life and the grim outlook that it had so far for him.

And he meets with sol and Bonnie who have just put up an ad saying that they have a place to rent and this is how Myers learns about them.
Sol has a disability; one hand is shorter than the other.

But he can still do pretty much anything.
He has sex with his wife, during which Bonnie is worried that the door at the bedroom is not locked with a key…

Their new tenant may come in.
When wood for the fire arrives, Sol says that he is able to cut it, but Myers is offering his help, since he has nothing else to do…
And besides, his mood is not excellent, he might be experiencing a severe depression, with his wife gone and his delicate recovery process…
-          ‘emptiness is the beginning of all things’
