Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman
Einstein told the Nobel committee- do not give the prize to Freud, he is just a psychologist…I have just learned that, watching a video with a lecture on psychology, from Yale- on YouTube. The fact is I can find quite a number of great, perhaps even giants of psychology on the same YouTube: as I write this I listen to Martin Seligman on positive psychology, there is Eric Berne and many more.
Emotional Intelligence: there’s a new concept for me- for a long time I thought that a great IQ is more than enough. With this book I have learned that Emotional Intelligence is as important, if not more.
Aristotle used to say that: “getting angry is easy, but being angry at the right time, with the right person, at the right degree, in the right way is difficult”
I guess we could say that you need a high EQ for that. you cannot be a good leader if you have a high IQ but low EQ. it works the same way for other jobs, important positions, even if we can learn about examples of good doctors lacking empathy, for instance. Optimists do better in all possible jobs, except for one…lawyers. It is better to be a pessimist if you want to be a lawyer.
Religious people are much happier than the rest…pitty I am not religious.
Goleman identified the five 'domains' of EQ as:
1. Knowing your emotions.
2. Managing your own emotions.
3. Motivating yourself.
4. Recognising and understanding other people's emotions.
5. Managing relationships, i.e., managing the emotions of others.
The most important thing: we can and should work on our EQ…
