I have been impressed by the novel that has inspired the film of the same name, co-written by the author of the Booker Prize nominee, and the adaptation is a very good motion picture, a good omen for 2024…it is the first film launched this year that I see, looking forward to Society of the Snow, which premiered on Netflix, but have not seen yet – the saga of the passengers that had to survive in the Andes

Eileen Dunlop is the main character of the novel and film, in the latter she is portrayed by Thomasin McKenzie, a talented young thespian, born in New Zealand, seen recently in Leave No Trace http://realini.blogspot.com/2018/10/leave-no-trace-written-and-directed-by.html a film where she lives in a national park, foraging and hiding with her deranged father, one some would call a conservationist, maybe

The heroine – or antiheroine – works at a prison facility, in Massachusetts, living with her father, who used to be a cop, but now he is menace and nuisance to his daughter and the neighbors, at one point, he is reported for aiming his gun at children, from the window of his house and Eileen gets to have the revolver secure from her parent

The excellent Shea Whigham – Siver Linings Playbook http://realini.blogspot.com/2021/07/91-out-of-100-for-silver-linings.html and other - is Jim Dunlop, traumatized by the loss of his wife, drinking without pause, wishing for death – the doctor will say that he will probably drink himself to death or get committed

He is abusive with his daughter, asking her to ‘get a life, be like her sister’, only the latter does not want to hear about him, she is married and she does not wish to see this drunk, not that Eileen is too much concerned with the fate of her parent, she would consider blaming him for something she would do

Which brings me to the spoiler alert, warning – do not read these lines, if you have reached this far, it is enough to see that I enjoyed the original material, and consider the motion picture good enough, if not a candidate for next year’s Academy Awards – we will have to see though what Marvel fare we have coming…

Early on, there is a new staff member at the prison, Rebecca is a handsome woman, educated at Harvard – how did she end up in this place, you wonder and in the movie she is the Academy Award Winner – who has once presented the show, which was something of an embarrassment – Anne Hathaway

Eileen Dunlop is awed by the accomplished, dignified, superior arrival, we had seen the protagonist imagining sexual encounters, she is masturbating in her dad’s old car, near lovers, then she has a fantasy in which a colleague takes her from the back and has sex with her, while she is using snow in her panties, to cool off or maybe get more intense, could be masochistic reactions to what has been passing through her brain

Rebecca invites Eileen for drinks, in one of the bars of the small town, where the men are harassing, one of them has no teeth, and they joke over them, saying he fell on the ice – we have snow on the streets and landscape throughout – but it could be his wife, eventually, the women dance with…each other

When one of the rude locals tries to interfere, insisting that Rebecca has to dance with him – incidentally, I was thinking that the natives were quite subdued, seeing that this is many decades back, in the backwoods, and the women embracing on the floor, if in a dance – the tough female punches the fellow right out

After all these many drinks, Eileen wakes up in her own vomit, in the car, a machine that would spill in the exhaust fumes, and which belonged to her father – he is very blunt, aggressive, when she comes into the house with this hangover, he throughs pillows at her and would not give her the keys, suspicious

He is sure she has been out with a man, does not believe when she says it was a woman from work – we could speculate over the reaction of the drunkard, if told that there is intimacy between her and that other female, would he be happier than that it was not a man, and she was telling him the truth, I doubt it

Eileen has to get to work, where she enters the office of her new friend, where she is again fantasizing – what else can one do in a small town, there the men are brutish, most just like the ones we could see the night before, at the bar – however, things take a dramatic, tragic turn and we have a second spoiler alert here

Our main character gets a call from Rebecca and when she arrives at the house, after some preliminaries, we see that something terrible has happened, for we have a tied up, wounded woman in the basement – Rebecca has had the suspicion that a young man, who is locked up at their prison, has had attenuating circumstances for his murder

He had killed his father, cut his throat and stabbing him multiple times, while the mother claimed to have heard nothing – so the amateur detective took it upon herself to obtain a confession, demonstrating the demonstrating father must have abused the son and ergo the brutal killing…what happens next, is for you to find out by watching this interesting, well-acted, original, different film, in a landscape with so (too) much Marvel

Now for my standard closing with a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/unique-in-world.html?q=unique+in+the+world  – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/realini-in-newsweek-participant-in.html

Some favorite quotes from To The Heritage and other works

‘Fiction is infinitely preferable to real life...As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the careless plot of reality...Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life…Its actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound…There are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions…Unlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed…What's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense…As random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find…Few stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author…’

‚Parturiunt montes, nascetur ridiculus mus’

“From Monty Python - The Meaning of Life...Well, it's nothing very special...Try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.”
