Patricide ends Lovely, Dark, Deep https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/09/lovely-dark-deep-by-joyce-carol-oates.html nominated for The Pulitzer Prize, and this last part is listed as a novella, the rest are short stories, including the one which gives the name to the oeuvre, preceding Patricide, and sharing some of the subject

 

In the previous short story, Robert Frost is the main character, a celebrated poet, interviewed by Evangeline Fife, a young woman who exposes the flaws of the man, nationalistic, racist – he sees the conquest of the Americas as a ‘civilizing’ act, ignoring, or approving of the genocide, because the natives were ‘inferior beings’

Patricide is about another famous auteur, Roland Marks, who has won the Nobel Prize for Literature, unlike some of his friends, Philip Roth https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/portnoys-complaint.html if Roland Marks is a figment of imagination, Philip Roth is the only other real writer to have been nominated…

 

Four times for The Pulitzer, just like Joyce Carol Oates, who might be using her own experience (the novelist always does, this is what I have read) to create Lou Lou and/or her father, the Nobel Laurate, it may be a case where both take from the author- Lou Lou aka Louise Marks is a dean, and the father a famous man of letters

The novella may be a crime story, and just like the dazzling Malice Aforethought https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/05/malice-aforethought-by-anthony-berkeley.html you may see from the start what is happening: Dean Marks will kill her parent, for this is what the definition of Patricide is

 

Evidently, we could have one of the other children come in and murder the Nobel Winner, but the chances are one in a million, and then we have soon a motive enter the plot, this beautiful, young woman, Cameron (at least I think that was the name) is in the mansion, for an interview to become the assistant.

Roland Marks has had five wives and a multitude of lovers, he is seventy-four, but infatuated with this blonde beauty, who is fifty years his junior (sounds enticing, or just frivolous, preposterous?) and they soon become lovers, to the chagrin, desperation of Lou Lou https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/03/oedipus-rex-by-sophocles-translated-by.html recalling Oedipus Rex

  In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin In The Fade has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, although in this cinephile's opinion, Una Mujer Fantastica- which has won the Oscar in the same category- Nelyubov or The Square would have been better choices. Having said that, Auf Dem Nichts is a very good, significant, remarkable feature, that attracts attention to violence against minorities, in this case the Kurdish community in Germany. It is therefore not one sided, we do not have only Muslim lunatics killing innocent "infidels", but also some extreme Europeans murdering the other side. The problem is that, unacceptable, horrifying and vile as these acts are, it appears that the overwhelming majority of atrocities are committed by zealots acting in the name of Islam- radical and unrepresentative as they are for this supposedly peaceful faith, although there are passages in its holy book that seem to insist on a violent jihad and ultimat...
