Elena Ivanovna Popova, a little landowning widow with ‘dimples on her cheeks’ lives isolated, does not go out, but Grigory Stepanovitch Smirnov, a middle-aged landowner, walks in and shouts, curses, because he claims the late Popov owed him 1,200 rubles for oats, and he wants the money, immediately, he has creditors himself

The widow insists she will pay, but she has no money here and now, the uninvited guest will have to return some other time, except this aggressive man will not leave until he is paid, he insults the footman and furthermore, he starts some diatribe against women – he has known a few, abandoned about nine, if I remember well

 

 https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/06/the-taming-of-shrew-by-william.html The Taming of The Shrew came to mind, in part because we have this conflict, increasing in intensity, between a man and a woman, in this case, about two hundred years ago, and then the cast was similar in the two adaptations of Chekhov and Shakespeare

George Constantin is Smirnov in The Bear and he was Petruchio in The Taming of The Shrew, in my view, he was the best thespian, I used to place him on the same level with Jack Nicholson, but seeing that the latter has acted in some rather ridiculous features, like Something’s Gotta Give, the former takes first place…

 

George Constantin https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/peer-gynt-by-henrik-ibsen-calling.html makes The Bear marvelous, just like anything he acted in becomes a chef d’oeuvre, granted, he chose better than Jack Nicholson, in the later years, Smirnov is abhorrent, but also amusing, appalling, but then naïve

If in the beginning he was threatening, determined to get his money under any circumstances, he even says he will physically fight Elena Popova, in a…duel, if we have equal rights and claims, then men must be able to face women under the same terms, which is an absurd, and yet intriguing proposition, in the nineteenth century

 

Nevertheless, Smirnov becomes infatuated, he speaks of love, and here I have reservations, since I have read https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/little-herr-friedmann-by-thomas-mann.html Thomas Mann, who wrote a short story in which the protagonist explains how the declarations of love are most often exaggerations

  In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin In The Fade has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, although in this cinephile's opinion, Una Mujer Fantastica- which has won the Oscar in the same category- Nelyubov or The Square would have been better choices. Having said that, Auf Dem Nichts is a very good, significant, remarkable feature, that attracts attention to violence against minorities, in this case the Kurdish community in Germany. It is therefore not one sided, we do not have only Muslim lunatics killing innocent "infidels", but also some extreme Europeans murdering the other side. The problem is that, unacceptable, horrifying and vile as these acts are, it appears that the overwhelming majority of atrocities are committed by zealots acting in the name of Islam- radical and unrepresentative as they are for this supposedly peaceful faith, although there are passages in its holy book that seem to insist on a violent jihad and ultimat...
