Some notes on Green Candleford
Humor
She had
her moments of ecstasy in the contemplation of beauty, periods of religious
doubts, hours of religious faith
Candleford
was a pleasanat and peaceful place but it was no second Garden of
Eden…sometimes one would break his neck falling…
Cycling
was considered such a sangeorus pastime that they telegraphed news of their
arrival embellished only ran down two fouls, one pig and…
Only for
those with means, then for most and only men, then some women …soon almost
anyone under forty was ‘awheel’
life at
the post office was not dull, she reads between clients, though miss Lane would
enter and ask if she knew all in the rules manual
This
postman converted at a chapel revivalist meeting and now he would ask people
‘how is it with your soul? Have you found salvation?’ impertinent questions
people thought
Laura
invited to join the Primsrose League, but her father was a liberal, so she said
so and then she was ‘contrarian’, did not think like the majority
Most men
who retunred from India had no regerets, except these two, one syas I wish back
there, hot, the other says we will never be back
Irish
harvesters wrork so much that Miss Lane helps them with postal orders after
hours to send money back home
They
asked her to write the letters for them and they were very tender, different
from the englsih loving to the wives
Gipsies –
Laura liked gypsies, though she wished they would not come with their baskets
in the office, 3, 4 at a time now how about Rosenau
This
gypsy told her her fortune for writing a letter, and said you will be loved by
people who don’t know you, presumably knowing she will be a writer
Mothers
horrified when told about the Oscar Wilde trial – never let me hear that name
again they said
Laura to
deliver letters parents worried
Philip

an invitation was unthinkable to him. You will be my girl the most unromantic
scene ever
Maybe
your own tales titan and Rosenau
Flora
departs in the first lines, she was fourteen and a half and would work in the
Post Office in Candleford Green , perhaps like Thompson
This was a
village very diffrenet from the hamlet in which she was born just like life in
a country town is different from a city
At the
beginning of the eighteen nineties any new subject for conversation was
precious in such places
Podtmistress
old friend of mother, Miss Lane
Her salary
of half a crown a wekk left no margin for saving
Miss Lane
was not a tall woman, but an erect carriage, commanding air gave her what was
then called a ‘presence’ – she had inherited the family business, her post
office work also provided her with entertainment
‘Clever’ was
the general village description of her, she also had this blacksmith business,
where men worked for her
Zillah is
the servant good name
This postman
converted at a chapel revivalist meeting and now he would ask people ‘how is it
with your soul? Have you found salvation?’ impertinent questions people thought
Laura reads

Shakespeare
This man did

Then Dickens

here some were better off
Luney Jo

when his mother died

Some life Church
Social with games, no films for twenty years yet would arrive or pass through
Sewing
parties where one of the members read aloud, while the others sewed
Also on
listening – people showed so much intrest you would expect them to go and take
the books of Dickens from library, but they listened did not read
Pratt girls,
somewhat pretentious fashion store well, considering and their father, aid of
Laura why Miss Lane could not get someone else instead of that little country
