Out of The Shelter by David Lodge was longlisted for the Booker Prize, it does not exist on The Greatest Books of All Time site, where I looked for it and found Changing Places, a chef d’oeuvre for me, at 1754th and other magnum opera by the same author even lower down the ranks…notwithstanding this algorithm, which I will be tempted to avoid in the future, this oeuvre was perfect for the under signed – you find thousands of reviews on works from the GOAT and other web pages on my blog https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/do-you-have-any-feedback.html and YouTube channel, where my macaws shine

10 out of 10
David Lodge https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/about-magnum-opus-changing-places-by.html is one of my favorite authors, and
Out of The Shelter was perfect in my view, in an afterword, the author says
that some of his friends prefer this to his other novels, I do not know if I
will go that far, but I was mesmerized
Timothy
Young was magnificent, even when he annoyed me, those scenes when I was
thinking he is going to get happy, maybe later there will be a spoiler alert,
but I still keep out of ‘revelations’ for now, only to see that the hero fails
to get further, when he is invited for that ‘free ride’ for instance, and he
declines!
This is a sixteen-year-old
that is invited on holyday to Heidelberg, where his sister, Kath or Kate, works
for the American Army, at the end of World War II, when Great Britain faced
many shortages, almost anything seemed to be in short supply, or unavailable http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/realini-in-newsweek-participant-in.html
Which
reminded me of the revolution in which I took part, and the link is above, a
mass movement that ended the rule of Ceausescu, a tyrant that kept people in
cold, dark, hungry and oppressed – the whole book, or almost all of it, felt
like an adventure, it is a Bildungsroman, for the main character becomes an
adult at the end
Timothy is
reluctant to travel to Germany, indeed, his trip on the train, before that
appears like a torture, but once he is there, a transformation takes place,
first of all, there is a lot of food available, I must say that I saw myself in
the adolescent, because we had had to suffer restrictions, abuse and more, lack
of proper food was one of these ordeals
This makes
me more determined to read David Lodge again https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/enraptured-in-small-world-by-david.html at least Changing Places and Small
World, in fact, I have started again the former, but there were problems with
the eBook I had
The novelist
explains in the afterword that the publication of Out of The Shelter was a
terrible enterprise, and it was his least successful novel, it is one of my Top
100 Favorites now…Timothy had not had sex, and that is a temptation in
Heidelberg, and there are some circumstances when I thought this is going to
happen
Not that
this was the only theme, indeed, it was not even the main idea in the plot, we
learn about the War, Americans, Germans, and so much more, I will just have to
repeat my conclusion at the end, this was a magnificent magnum opus, it is such
a shame that it has been forgotten, neglected because of circumstances, in my
view
