Michael Dibdin https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/02/a-rich-full-death-by-michael-dibdin.html is the author of five detective books that are on The 1,000 Novels Everyone Must Read list, he has written much more, but these are among the best, at least according to The Guardian, others disagree, and Dirty Tricks is just 6846th on The GOAT site

 

With this mystery, I have read all five: Ratking, Dead Lagoon, Dirty Tricks, A Rich Full Death, Vendetta…the feeling I have now is that I liked Ratking best, and then Dead Lagoon might last, nevertheless, I must confess that I do not remember much, if anything, except that Aureliano Zen was a character I liked

Dirty Tricks is not about, or with him, Tim is what we would call the anti-hero here, even if some of his qualities, things he says endear him (at least to this reader) ‘let’s face it, those who can, have fun. The others, too poor in pocket or spirit, have children’, you may disagree, but then let me quote a classic, Stumbling on Happiness

Tim, the narrator, is invited by Dennis to his house, and then the latter’s wife, Karen, jumps on the guest, literally, they will have a lot of sex, stimulated by the presence of the husband, she feels it would be cheating to copulate away, but then she performs felatio with her spouse a few meters from them, and laughs doing it

 

Indeed, her laugh and the associated movements brings Tim to orgasm, he comes into her mouth, and there are other scenes that belong in Anais Nin https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/12/a-model-and-other-stories-by-anais-nin.html or some other erotica, however, with Dennis gone, the love life suffers

Maybe a spoiler alert would be needed, or I should have included one above, it feels somewhat, or completely preposterous to assume people read these lines, and not just the first few, but all the way down here…Tim is also abominable, monstrous, to clear the air after I sympathized with (some side of) him

 

‘every passing girl a kick in the balls’ he says at some point, this frustration, the character of a ‘parvenu’ will bring him to some unexpected decisions, payback – he wants the fortune, but also acceptance in higher, educated circles, some of what happens is hilarious, enjoyable, parts of it did not make much sense for me https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/05/malice-aforethought-by-anthony-berkeley.html

  In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin In The Fade has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, although in this cinephile's opinion, Una Mujer Fantastica- which has won the Oscar in the same category- Nelyubov or The Square would have been better choices.
