6 out of 10
I have seen
Cold Mountain before https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/06/cold-mountain.html and I was disappointed, since it
keeps coming up on film channels that I surf through, once in a while I have a
glimpse at what was supposed to be a major oeuvre, maybe it is, only I cannot
see it and here is mea culpa
Also, a
spoiler alert might be required, so that I do not have complaints, regarding
not the ending or anything like that, but the fact that I veer off the subject,
ergo, all I had to say is already above, I did not enjoy this motion picture,
it is mostly a case of having too high expectations, in this case, I was
waiting for perfection
Which brings
me to a classic of psychology, The Paradox of Choice, wherein Barry Schwartz explains
the difference between Satisfizer and Maximizer https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/the-paradox-of-choice-by-barry-schwartz_30.html the former is happy with very good,
while the latter is fussy, and wants the impossible
Cold Mountain was filmed in the
central area of Romania, where I lived at that time, 2001, and since all these
stars were coming to this (small) town, it was a fantastic opportunity: we
drove around, looked at the sets near Zarnesti, there were tents only some
hundreds of meters from our house
…it was surreal
Furthermore,
the cast was nec plus ultra, although at the end, I did not see merit anywhere,
the fact that Renee Zellweger won the Oscar for this is incomprehensible, she
was much better in Chicago, maybe it is a question of compensating https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/chicago-based-on-book-by-bob-fosse.html
Jude Law was
also nominated, for Best Actor in a Leading Role, when he is radiant, magisterial,
superb in The Talented Mr. Ripley, but here we have a forgettable presence, or
else, more likely, I am just digging in with my wrong assumptions…I took all
the trouble to go to the cinema to see this, and I seldom travel there…
‘Parturient
montes, nascetur ridiculus mus’ the Latin for the mountains labored and a
ridiculous mouse will be born, and then another thing from the same dead
language – ‘the eagle does not catch flies’, to continue, these were
hyperboles, evidently, and the truth is I was unable to appreciate this, and
thus I will mention another quintessential work
Stumbling On
Happiness https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/02/stumbling-on-happiness-by-david-gilbert.html by Daniel Gilbert explains the myths
of happiness, how we thin we would be so happy, if only we were to get this
promotion, have that car, watch this spectacular Cold Mountain, and then
Hedonic Adaptation comes in
