If we compare The Public Enemy with The Godfather https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/04/the-godfather-ii-by-mario-puzo-this.html then the former seems like a mediocre feature, except we should lower our expectations, a good rule, which worked recently with Jurassic Park, I started it without an ecstatic feeling, and it is so good

 

James Cagney has the leading role of Tom Powers, The Public Enemy, and he was a great thespian in his time – indeed, if we accept this and some other motion pictures as classic, then he has a contribution, The New York Times has this as one of The 1,000 Best Movies Ever Made, and this was the reason why I saw it

Robert Evans has written a very interesting book on films, he was an actor, producer and then head of Paramount, the man being the aforementioned Godfather, Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/chinatown-written-by-robert-towne.html you find incredible stories in this book

 

Some are jocular: Robert Evans says that Frank Sinatra wanted Mia Farrow to abandon the production of Rosemary’s Baby, which she refused, and furthermore, when this movie became a success, she wanted Evans to take a double page add, with the box office of her picture on one side and the taking of the Sinatra flop on the other

As far as I can remember, Robert Evans had met James Cagney when he started as a thespian and had some nice things to say about the star https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/the-kid-stays-in-picture-by-robert-evans.html who has been very king to him, Sharon Stone on the other hand would terrify him later

 

Since I approach the end of this note, I will first insert a spoiler alert, not that I would write about what happens at the end – which was excellent, by the way, impressive and credible – but because I will go off a tangent with my favorite comparisons between what I saw on the screen and the headlines of the past years

I have had complaints, especially from MAGA, the members of the cult whose leader is The Orange Public Enemy – this is how I see this man https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/confidence-man-making-of-donald-trump.html convicted, a serial liar, narcissist, scoundrel, a ‘loser’, indeed, most of the insults he proffers are true for him

 

What do I mean a ‘loser’, when he made it to the top of the world, with power, billions and all that? He confirms what Marcus Aurelius https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/06/meditations-of-aurelius-new-translation.html wrote: ‘power and wealth are meaningless’, this orange fool has had those and what is the use?

  In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin In The Fade has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, although in this cinephile's opinion, Una Mujer Fantastica- which has won the Oscar in the same category- Nelyubov or The Square would have been better choices. Having said that, Auf Dem Nichts is a very good, significant, remarkable feature, that attracts attention to violence against minorities, in this case the Kurdish community in Germany. It is therefore not one sided, we do not have only Muslim lunatics killing innocent "infidels", but also some extreme Europeans murdering the other side.
