8 out of 10

F. Scott Fitzgerald has written the chef d’oeuvre The Great Gatsby https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/the-great-gatsby-by-scott-f-fitzgerald.html which is the third greatest book on the GOAT site, and it is even found at number one on other relevant web pages, clearly crème de la crème

Notwithstanding that, and the fact that he has written other magnum opera, Tender Is The Night, and mesmerizing short stories, we find that F Scott Fitzgerald (and other fabulous writers, such as William Faulkner) have been invited to Hollywood to write scripts: an anecdote with Faulkner, Howard Hawks and Clark Gable comes to mind

The famous director and tycoon took Clark Gable and William Faulkner in his car, the actor asked about a book to read, and Howard Hawks said ‘why don’t ask Bill, back there’, and Gable turns and asks do you write, and Faulkner says ‘yes, what do you do”, words to the effect that neither knew of the other ‘celebrity’

https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/08/the-reivers-reminiscence-by-william.html coming back to the motion picture, Three Comrades did not overwhelm me, although it was not such a disappointment as some of the features from The NYT 1,000 list seen lately, Night of The Living Dead for instance, or Dead Ringers

at the end of World War I, Three Comrades open a sort of garage, they used to be pilots, if I did not get this wrong – I mean, at least one was, they tell him they will destroy his plane, ergo he sets it on fire himself…they are good at mechanics, they have this very fast (for that time) automobile and they race a fellow

the latter is rich, offers to buy the car, and the Three Comrades refuse, however, there is a young woman with this rather obnoxious man, Patricia Hollmann aka Margaret Sulavan, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role – all Three Comrades are enthused, they like this attractive, charming person, who is the opposite of the driver

Erich Maria Remarque is much better known for his magnum opus https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/12/all-quiet-on-western-front-by-erich.html All Quiet on The Western Front, where the focus is on the war itself, though we get the background, what happens away from the front

Alas, even if Patricia Holmann marries one of the Three Comrades, there is little cheer – spoiler alert here – she is not well, and that made me think of https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/12/a-farewell-to-arms-by-ernest-hemingway.html A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway, very much liked by others, but not one of my favorites

In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin

Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice written by Larry Tucker and Paul Mazursky, directed by the latter is included on The New York Times’ Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made list, and Variety has published recently its Top 100 Comedies – or else, I have learned about this lately – where this feature has a top spot, as far as I remember it is higher that the 50th spot – speaking of these pages, you have access to my own more than five thousand notes on films from these and other compilations, together with another five thousand reviews on magnum opera from The Greatest Books of All Time and other sites on my blog and You Tube channel https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/do-you-have-any-feedback.html you may even subscribe, if you wish
