I have listened to this play before https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/08/rur-by-karel-capek.html and I have not been thrilled, indeed, there are two reasons to hear it again, and write a note: first, George Constantin, a thespian as good as Jack Nicholson or any other, is in it and to enjoy his voice is a treat

 

Second, we have been under the threat of AI for some time, and this RUR is about robots and what will happen with them, will they have rights, maybe they will rebel, there have been many incidents where AI – which for practical purposes we can exchange for robots – have been hallucinating, using offensive, racist language

We have had motion pictures on the subject of what to expect from the interaction between humans and Artificial Intelligence https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/03/her-written-and-directed-by-spike-jonze.html Her, written and directed by Spike Jonze comes to mind, the hero falls in love with an Operating System

 

And then we have a mass migration towards this, hoi polloi find themselves trapped in the same mirage, and this has happened in reality, though it is not a wide spread phenomenon – there are other problems associated with the rise of AI, massive unemployment for one, even if it is not feasible to get paranoid and gloomy

The counterargument uses history: people panicked when the automobile gained ground, for what would happen to all the carriage drivers – they lost their jobs – but then you could not stop progress, and we would be so much worse off, had the cars been banned somehow, so there are gains and then loses, a good read would be

 

Why The West Rules For Now https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/03/why-west-rules-for-now-by-ian-morris.html by Ian Morris gives us the history, but we also have a look into the future, the theory of Singularity is explained, the notion that AI, or a computer would become smarter than the whole humanity by 2035

It is not exactly what you get in the book, I have qualms about what I just said, but the point is AI is very advanced, they had this system – was it Mythos? – which is kept unavailable, actually, they have released it to a limited number of customers, which is too powerful, it can be dangerous in that it can hack into…well, anything

 

Then they had this dispute, the thing called the War Department now had a quarrel with Anthropic (again, it may be one of the other ones) and put them on the list of foes, because the company would not agree to have AI used on missiles, or something like that, be involved in killing people, but then what do you expect from Confidence Man https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/confidence-man-making-of-donald-trump.html

  In The Fade aka Auf Dem Nichts, written by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin In The Fade has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, although in this cinephile's opinion, Una Mujer Fantastica- which has won the Oscar in the same category- Nelyubov or The Square would have been better choices. Having said that, Auf Dem Nichts is a very good, significant, remarkable feature, that attracts attention to violence against minorities, in this case the Kurdish community in Germany. It is therefore not one sided, we do not have only Muslim lunatics killing innocent "infidels", but also some extreme Europeans murdering the other side. The problem is that, unacceptable, horrifying and vile as these acts are, it appears that the overwhelming majority of atrocities are committed by zealots acting in the name of Islam- radical and unrepresentative as they are for this supposedly peaceful faith, although there are passages in its holy book that seem to insist on a violent jihad and ultimat...
