L’Etranger https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/12/letranger-by-albert-camus-10-out-of-10.html is one of the Greatest Books of All
Time, indeed, the GOAT site has it at 22, while Le Monde has this chef d’oeuvre
at Number One on its Top 100 Best Novels, it is one of my Top 50 Favorites,
with its astounding start:
“Aujourd'hui,
maman est morte. Ou peut-être hier, je ne sais pas. J'ai reçu un télégramme de l’asile:
« Mère décédée. Enterrement demain. Sentiments distingués. » Cela ne veut rien
dire. C'était peut-être hier.” Nevertheless, there are some impressive passages
in La Chute as well, though it is not on the same level
It made me
think of Sophie’s Choice when we have a Nazi officer demand that the mother
choses which of her children would die, actually, I am wondering if William
Styron has not taken his inspiration from Albert Camus – the ‘action’ takes
place in Amsterdam, though we are in fact looking at thoughts, memories…no
thriller here
In fact,
Magister Ludi Kingsley Amis https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/03/the-kings-english-guide-to-modern-usage.html dismissed what he called The
Outsider – L’Etranger may have been translated like that, for some editions – as
‘piss’, but he was very hard on a great number of authors, from Virginia Woolf
to Vladimir Nabokov
I have sent a
few lines describing La Chute to my daughter, Hannah, who lives in Amsterdam: “Have
you noticed that Amsterdam's concentric canals resemble the circles of hell?
The middle-class hell, of course, peopled with bad dreams. When one comes from
the outside, as one gradually goes through those circles, life — and hence its
crimes — becomes denser, darker. Here, we are in the last circle’ I meant it as
a joke
I hope there
is no actual resemblance, though the point is in the title – The Fall of
humanity – they see a former Jewish area, which was vacuumed by the Nazis, The
Fall was connected with Dante https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/the-inferno-by-dante-aligheri.html - I am amazed at people who swallow
conspiracy theories
Take this
fella I meet at the gym downtown, he used to be a ‘commissioner’, the
equivalent of a colonel, retired, but getting a fat pension, and another salary
from…the state, quite appalling, and then one day, he tells me the Holocaust
was ‘fake’, alas, he is not the only one with such monstrous ideas, they seem
sane, but they are not
Evidently,
the most infamous peddlers of such ‘theories’ is the Orange Monkey https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/03/fire-and-fury-inside-trump-white-house.html obsessed with the 2020 election he ‘won’,
proof that the once free world has a fool next to the nuclear button, what a
disgrace and a…Fall
