8 out of 10
This is a
crazy, good, original comedy, a bit over the top at times (or for most of the
duration) but in many parts, quite funny, even Tom Cruise https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/09/eyes-wide-shut-by-stanley-kubrick.html has abandoned Ethan Hunt and has an
unusual performance, as a fat bold tycoon…
Incidentally,
I understand that his upcoming role is against type as well…the premise for
Tropic Thunder is that a team of thespians are going to the jungle to film a would-be
blockbuster, Ben Stiller is Tugg Speedman, an actor who had been through a
rough patch, he played a disabled man, but went too far with his rendition
We would
have an excellent critique from Kirk Lazarus (I hope I remember well) aka
Robert Downey, who looks at Rain Man, Sean Penn’s performance as a man with a
challenge, then Forrest Gump https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/03/forrest-gump-by-winston-groom-another.html and how the hero meets Nixon
From the
start, we are assaulted with jokes, many good ones, and ridiculous situations,
some of them happened in real life -after all, they have this Orange Fool as
leader, who attacked the pope these last few days, and all allies in general,
posted an image of himself as Jesus, and pretended he thought he is a doctor…
On the set,
by mistake, the special effects man blows up a whole set of false explosives,
costing millions, without the cameras recording…there are fighting scenes that mock
the likes of Rambo, and then Tugg Speedman is injured, and is left with no
hands, he just as these prosthetics that he moves around, in a sick, hilarious
way
Kirk Lazarus
is meant as another satire, a shot at Method Acting, the quintessential
thespian who believes in that is Daniel Day Lewis https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/10/there-will-be-blood-written-and.html the only one to have won three
Oscars for leading roles, there are others with three, but not all for leading
parts
Steve Coogan
is the director of the movie within the movie, and he has this idea to get the
team in the jungle and get to some other Method, make them get involved in real
action, and use cameras all around to see them at work, except he gets blown up
by a real mine, they also have some guerillas, drug smugglers around
Some
passages are not my cup of tea, Coogan is not a favorite of this cinephile for
instance, and I am not a fan of Jack Black, some scenes are on the edge, when it
turns out that the drug dealers, who are also guerillas, admire Tugg Speedman
it is mirthful for some seconds, but then it gets quite boring, at least for
this spectator
