Project Hail
Mary has reminded me of 2001 – A Space Odyssey https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/2001-space-odyssey-by-arthur-c-clarke.html a classic of Science Fiction – by
the way, let me attack the novel and say it has too much…Science, which is so
silly and a spoiler alert
Not the
usual spoiler alert – though I will tell you what happens, no, I am just
playing around, I write this on April 1, Fool’s Day – an alert in the sense
that I am ‘totally’ – some nonsense I keep hearing, a common word these days –
the wrong person to write about this: what does it mean ‘too much Science’,
when we are talking Science Fiction
It was
difficult for me to follow, that is the main thing, and then what was ‘clear’
did not seem scientific, such as the basis of the plot, the ‘Astrophage’ that
are bringing an ice age on earth, and ultimately will kill half the population
or more, as in there will be famine, with the sun dying, and then wars will bring
Armageddon
According to
Mark https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/01/according-to-mark-by-penelope-lively.html is a fabulous novel by Penelope
Lively, and you find there this argument ‘the novelist has an infinity of
choices, He chooses what is to happen, to whom it happens, and in what way he
will relate what happens, the picture he constructs is complete on its own
terms…when he says this is the story and the whole story we must accept
it…perhaps novelists are the only people telling the truth’ and what a story
this is
Having
‘attacked’ Andy Weir, I must say ‘chapeau’, and anyway, it was really an admission
of limitation, The Project has more science than I can take, but what an
imagination, and humor- let me mention the start, which was marvelous and made
me stay to the end, with the caveat that a lot has passed by me, without
comprehension:
Here is the
‘resemblance with 2001’ – we have a computer on board the Hail Mary, just like
in the Arthur Clarke novel, and the AI is asking Ryland Grace, the hero, what
is two plus two, and the man does not it, he just woke up from a comma, they
had to be in that state for their interstellar journey to avoid fights on board
the ship
The other
two humans have died because of this comma, and then we get flashbacks, what
happened, how humanity tried to envisage a way out of Apocalypse https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/11/apocalypse-now-francis-ford-coppola.html and the way Ryland Grace became part
of the Project
One major
achievement is the alien, Rocky, and the description, what happens give
credibility to the narrative, it is not for nothing that it is so popular: I
was talking to this young woman at the gym, and boasted that I am listening to
this, and somehow offered to give her the material, except she already read, if
only to the point where it became to dark and she stopped, because she did not
want to go to the tragic stages…
