Journey Into Fear by Eric Ambler is one of The 1,000 Novels Everyone Must Read – the author has two other books there, I have reviewed Epitaph for a Spy and The Mask of Dimitrios and thousands of other magnum opera from the aforementioned list, The Greatest Books of All Time and other pages on my blog https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/do-you-have-any-feedback.html and YouTube channel, where my macaws are the main attraction

8 out of 10

I have read and enjoyed Epitaph for a Spy https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/11/epitaph-for-spy-by-eric-ambler-is.html by Eric Ambler, which is also included on the list of 1,000 Novels Everyone Must Read, indeed, with Journey Into Fear I have come to the end of the triathlon, no more Ambler among the 1,000 You Must Read left for me

This was a good novel, fortunately, the audiobook version has an excellent reader, and he kept me on board, I tend to miss when it comes into that form – my mates say they cannot listen to audiobooks, worse, my daughter is not a fan of the medium, but then a good work deserves reading on paper, or kindle

The Mask of Dimitrious https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/the-mask-of-dimitrios-by-eric-ambler-10.html would be the third presence on that list, but this last is also in The Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time, which is a list published in 1990 by the Crime Writers' Association (CWA) of Great Britain, where it is ranked 24th

The Mystery Writers of America (MWA) published a similar list named The Top 100 Mystery Novels of All Time, and on this one, The Mask of Dimitrios is 17th, though on The GOAT, these books have a lower ranking

What is interesting at Journey Into Fear is that we have a local character, one called Banat, and Eric Ambler even explains that this is the name of a province in my country, he delves a little into the history of World War II here, the Iron Guard – a fascist outfit, in some ways like MAGA – was very powerful, and Banat was associated with it

Graham is the hero, he is a British engineer, working in Istanbul at some canons, which are crucial for fighting in World War II, ergo, the enemies want to sabotage and what better way than eliminate the engineer who would delay the work for long enough to make it an advantage for Germany, in the games of the conflict

Banat is a hired killer, enters the hotel room of the main personage, and shoots at him, only managing to hit the target in the hand, nevertheless, they will try later, the assassin will get on board a ship that is supposed to take Graham to safety, first in Italy, and then back home, under a false name, with fake passport

Worse still, the mastermind, Moeller, is on the same ship and they are determined to eliminate the hero on this second attempt, Graham tries to convince the second in command on the (quite small) vessel that he needs to get off fast, but he is derided, and his story ridiculed, some hope comes from a…Turkish agent

Kuvetli was meant to protect the British asset, but will he manage it? I will stop here, before spoiler alerts would be needed – actually, one is needed because I venture off the subject, once I have established that the novel is good, if not to be found on my Top 500 Favorites, and I put in a few lines here on something completely different

We had some argument in the sauna, earlier, regarding the fact that…I regard too much: at the gym, we have these women who use the ‘fashionable?’ outfits, with very tight pants, and allegedly, in some cases, without any underwear, so I sometimes look for a few seconds, some fellas rebuffed me – why do you look? Well, why these provocative, screaming clothes, which are about to break open on those bending bodies?
