The Testament of Ann Lee by Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold, directed by the latter is based on the book Testimonies of the Life, Character, Revelations and Doctrines of Mother Ann Lee, and the Elders With Her: Through Whom the Word of Eternal Life Was ... Living Witnesses, in Union With the Church by Rufus Bishop and a few other works mentioned at the end of the motion picture which I have enjoyed, and thus here is my take – you have another few thousand notes on films from The New York Times’ Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made and other lists, plus more thousands of reviews on books from The Greatest Books of All Time and other sites on my blog https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/do-you-have-any-feedback.html

The
Testament of Ann Lee is an impressive achievement, Amanda Seyfried as Ann Lee
is one of the main achievements here, I have seen her recently in The Housemaid
https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/02/the-housemaid-by-freida-mcfadden-has.html but that was on a different level
There is an
article in Variety (the app is available free of charge) in which we find that
she has used a ‘prosthetic anus’, and I wonder if The Testament of Ann Lee is
the movie in which they had this idea, there is a lot of nudity, sexual, but
also there is torture, at some stage, fanatics attack her and the acolytes
In the first
part, the life of the heroine appears to be ‘ordinary’, that is for the
eighteenth century, albeit the sex may seem uncommon – perhaps I should go on
and read some books on the moeurs of the Middle Ages, sexual habits, on second
thought The Decameron might do https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/10/los-mejores-cuentos-eroticos-aka-best.html by Givanni Boccaccio
The latter
is one of The Best 100 Books of All Time, The Norwegian Book Club (or was it
clubs, I think there were more than one) has asked the luminaries of a few
decades ago, prominent intellectuals of our age, Umberto Eco, Salman Rushdie,
Nadine Gordimer, and others to name the greatest magnum opera and ergo we have
the list
Abraham Standerin is Ann Lee’s partner, they
have this kinky connection (my bad, it was not like that, but I am just too
inclined to use this here, with the knowledge that nobody will be offended,
since no one reads these lines, I know, because of the subscription numbers I
have – 6 people) and it is like BDSM in some way
Ann Lee
reminds me of Elmer Gantry https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2026/03/elmer-gantry-by-sinclair-lewis.html I have been thrilled by the film
with Burt Lancaster- his best role might Count Salinas, the one with the famous
quote ‘for things to stay the same, everything has to change’, Ann Lee might be
a version of Elmer
Before she
becomes ‘Mother Lee’, the ‘embodiment of the feminine aspect of Jesus’, she has
many children – I forgot how many – and then we see the excruciating pain,
eventually she decides there will be no more sex – Abrham will try to rape her
at a later stage, breaking this rule – and that was a defining feature of
Shakers
There are
countless films on religion, prophets, apostles https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/08/paul-apostle-of-christ-written-by.html by the way, we have had Jim
Caviezel, Jesus in Mel Gibson’s film that will get a sequel soon, in the sauna
downtown, but I am afraid he embraces conspiracy theories and Trump, and that
makes him persona non grata for this biased cinephile
