A History of The World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage is an outstanding work, which was to be expected, seeing as the author has been – I am not sure if he still is – one of the editors of The Economist…I think he was in charge for the latest issue of The World in 2026, every year, they publish what they except to happen in the next, and I think they did not foresee the war against Iran, and the cataclysmic consequences, to grasp the size of the catastrophe, you could do no better than read The Economist – you have thousands of reviews on books recommended by this distinguished publication, also from The Greatest Books of All Timea and other pages on my blog https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/do-you-have-any-feedback.html

9 out of 10

This is a fabulous work, which takes a creative look at history – by the way, one of the mesmerizing, hilarious luminaries of America, H.L. Mencken, said that ‘historians are failed novelists’ https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/12/the-american-credo-by-h-l-mencken-and.html or something to that effect

Tom Standage has been, indeed, I hope he still is, or else I will have to reconsider my admiration for the paper, one of the most important people at The Economist, and that means that he has all my respect – this is the best media source in the world, if you ask me, I have been reading it for about 44 years, I am tempted to joke here…

Diluting the effect this has on the perception of my age, I wanted to add since the age of 2…notwithstanding this, I was a student in geology – geophysics and used to go to the British and American premises, the former had a Library within the same compound as the Embassy, the other had a Cultural Center and I read there The Economist

Never stopped, furthermore, I have taken on books by their staff and/or recommended by them – History of The World in 6 Glasses confirms the immense talent of those who contribute to the paper that is giving – what is it, hundreds of millions, I wonder what the subscription number is – the readers a view of the world

Kingsley Amis https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/on-drink-by-kingsley-amis-author-of.html is my favorite author, number one shared with Marcel Proust, and he has a collection of essays On Drink, I think there is there a statement more or less like ‘drink helped the world survive, without it, we would not have the progress we see’

I am paraphrasing, I think and hope, nevertheless, we read in A History of The World in 6 Glasses about beer, wine, rum, tea, coffee, Coca Cola –it has surprised me to find that ‘Beer to was first made in the Fertile Crescent and by 3000 B.C.E. was so important to Mesopotamia and Egypt that it was used pay wages

With time, things have changed, for some centuries they have added ingredients that modify the original formula – changes are not always welcome, Coca Cola tried to launch the New Coke and it was such a disaster that they had to go back to the old formula…they made a version without color for…general Zhiukov

You have so many anecdotes, episodes from the past: there is for instance the confrontation that echoes what happens today in Iran: Coca Cola offered its product in Israel and it was thus boycotted by the Arab world, decades back, and Pepsi had a near monopoly, Saudi Arabia was its third biggest market, outside the US, after Canada and Mexico
