 The Beach by Alex Garland

Brilliant

This book is one of the most enjoyable that I have read in some time.
It was mesmerizing.
I had such a great pleasure reading it that the end was a disappointment in the sense that I wished it went on.
It made me think of some other classics, like The Lord of the Flies, where the same paradise conditions are in place.
And yet, humans manage to bring havoc to the most promising settings and in the place that is as close to heaven as you can get.
This brings me to another amazing book that I am currently savoring:
-          War, What is it Good For
Where there are various takes on history and theories are explained on the nature of humans, who seems to be violent.
Returning to The Beach- it has a magical pull and even if terrible things happen, I still feel the urge to get there.
On the other hand, it may serve as a lesson in positive thinking, with gratitude at the top of the list and the winning eliminated
-          Instead of longing for life on a beach, in the eternal summer of the tropics…
-          You better be grateful and enjoy what you have
The interesting thing about reading this novel was that I had already seen the movie, which although good to watch, did not impress me terribly.
Which is good, because I hate it when I know what happens at the end, which my wife was kind of intent on informing me.
Not exactly with this one gets killed and the other is maimed, but in terms of the negative outlook, which I hope I will not do for you.
But what am I saying…who is going to read this note to see if it is ok to read a book that has a cult following?
In fact, I am curious to see how many tens of thousands of ratings there will be on goodreads, with all the criticism that I may add here.
Fascinated as I am about this book, I must say that there are a few things that did not work out for me.
On the one hand, the set up on the beach looks like the perfect place, but there are some details that made me suspicious.
Not in the sense of the story, which had to have bad guys and negative events taking place, but in verisimilitude
How can so many people be blissfully happy on fish and vegetables all year round and not think and talk about any serious subject?
There is another part I disliked so much that I think that I should make some notes with a different outcome for books that I liked.
I do not mean just the end that I cannot mention or write about here without a prior spoiler alert, but about one third of the book.
From one point on, I did not like the way things were going, the relationship with Francoise for instance…
Yes, this is one reason why Garland has written such a successful work and I will never do that, but I am talking about how much I would have loved to read about a Graceland where a number of issues did not pop out.
Therefore, it could be a good idea to increase my well being just by taking a given subject from such a sensational book and make my bliss even higher by making up a continuation that I would love- and alas, nobody else.
The important part that I just passed through was the conversions with the dead guy- Duffy- which may make sense, but did not pleasure me at all- they annoyed me actually.

But all in all, the enjoyment was fantastic and I have some trouble readjusting to my own paradise island, which is a rare blessing, but different from a place in the Gulf of Thailand, which looks like a dream…until you read more about it.
