The Essays of George Orwell are exhilarating, even when they take down (or especially then) some deity like Dali https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/10/benefit-of-clergy-some-notes-on.html an essay that gave me satisfaction in that I had already missed much of the appeal of the painter, and now I have the “confirmation” of Orwell

 

The essay on antisemitism comes at a particular sensitive time, the other day we have seen an abominable attack on Jewish people, on Yom Kippur, at a synagogue in Britain, two have been killed, ergo the problem highlighted by George Orwell is still there, and getting worse in some places, we have had that horrific Hamas attack

 “There are about 400,000 known Jews in Britain, and in addition some thousands or, at most, scores of thousands of Jewish refugees who have entered the country from 1934 onwards. The Jewish population is almost entirely concentrated in half a dozen big towns and is mostly employed in the food, clothing and furniture trades…”

 

That was the background at the time of World War II, when this essay was written, and the situation has changed, some things are much better, but following the Hamas atrocities, when they entered Israel and killed about fourteen hundred women, children and men, the absolute majority civilians, IDF has been pummeling Gaza

Now we have the result of a wave of protests against Bibi mostly, and the ‘genocide’ taking place in Palestine – I put it in a quote, because that seems to be the general assumption, but the Israeli government denies it, this complicates things, because antisemitism will now use the cover of worry for Palestinians

The Israeli architect said ‘she is a bitch’, now it is alright for citizens of a democracy to question, criticize, oppose their leaders, for others to attack them could be interpreted, and often it is antisemitism, again: I am subjective in this game.
