The Cemetery of Kozin by Isaac Babel is one of the short stories from the Red Cavalry collection, placed on the 522nd spot by the algorithm of The Greatest Books of All Time site, since it takes new data in, changes in the public and critics taste (perhaps), the place could and will change, as for the taste of the hoi polloi, well, they know of The Da Vinci Code, but many fewer have heard of Nineteen Eighty Four – which is sixth on the same GOAT site -nevertheless, you find more than five thousand reviews of books from the aforementioned site and others, plus notes on films from The New York Times’ Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made and other places on my blog and YouTube channel https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/02/is-this-unique-could-it-make-money.html a visit would be welcome

9 out of 10
We can see
from the Red Cavalry https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/pan-apolek-by-isaac-babel-is-one-of.html short stories why Isaac Babel was
called "the greatest prose writer of Russian Jewry"
Notwithstanding
that, the narratives are hard to read, in the sense that there is cruelty, the
horror of war is obvious and horrendous, an old Jewish man is killed in one of
the first stories, and he asks his tormentors for mercy…
He does not
want something for him https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/stories-by-isaac-babel-his-red-cavalry.html he is wise enough to see that these villains
are not going to listen to a plea to spare him, but at least they should murder
him outside, not in front of his daughter, only they do not grant him even that
Animals are
also tortured and killed, in the story of The Goose, the narrator tramples and
then has the woman of the house cook the bird, then we have another tale
wherein this man has his parents die, the neighbors steal things from their
property and he takes revenge by murdering old women, dogs hang over wells…
Then he
collects the things, takes them back inside the house, brings the cow out of
the shed, puts a gun inside her mouth and shoots the beats, meanwhile, the calf
will scream and will be abandoned there, with the house burning
Another
story is called The Death of Dolgushov, by the time this note will be posted,
The Death will have been on the blog, maybe on Goodreads as well – over here,
they kicked me out for some time, because I am a fervent opponent of Orange
Woland, an absolute idiot in my book – and we have terror in there as well
This fighter
had been hit, now he ahs his guts out and wants to be killed by his comrade,
who does not do it, because he is too attached to the dying fellow, or maybe he
is made so bad by the war, furthermore, the Poles will come and torture the
captive even more, we are told, they are the enemy in here
Which brings
me to the reverse situation we have in reality https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/09/gedali-by-isaac-babel-whoa-was-called.html where Russia is clearly the invader,
even worse, after they have killed so many Ukrainians, they seem set to cause
trouble for the rest of Europe
The perfect
storm may be approaching, as in on top of this terrifying situation, the firm
where I have 14%, is not making profit this year, the senior partner told me
some days ago- he will take me to a meeting with a consultant a week from now,
to present options: if the sale is viable, a new boss will be brought in and
other possibilities
Maybe some
shares should be acquired, as a possible income, if this one will dry out, the
flat that is rented now should be sold, though here my sister has a say, and
then the spouse says she will move elsewhere, we are separated anyway
Now for my
standard closing of the note with a question, and invitation – I am on
Goodreads as Realini Ionescu, at least for the moment, if I keep on expressing
my views on Orange Woland aka TACO, it may be a short-lived presence
Also, maybe
you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this
https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/02/is-this-unique-could-it-make-money.html – as it is, this is a unique technique, which
we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make
lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not
know how to get the benefits from it, other than the exercise per se
There is also the small matter of working for
AT&T – this huge company asked me to be its Representative for Romania and
Bulgaria, on the Calling Card side, which meant sailing into the Black Sea wo
meet the US Navy ships, travelling to Sofia, a lot of activity, using my
mother’s two bedrooms flat as office and warehouse, all for the grand total of
$250, raised after a lot of persuasion to the staggering $400…with retirement
ahead, there are no benefits, nothing…it is a longer story, but if you can help
get the mastodont to pay some dues, or have an idea how it can happen, let me
know
As for my
role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/realini-in-newsweek-participant-in.html
Some
favorite quotes from To The Hermitage and other works
‘Fiction is
infinitely preferable to real life...As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or
Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the
careless plot of reality...Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more
moving than those in real life…Its actions are more intricate, illuminating,
noble, profound…There are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment,
twists, turns, gratified resolutions…Unlike reality, all of this you can
experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed…What's more,
books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order
of sense…As random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who
provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful
mystifications we can find…Few stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that
wise epic by an often foolish author…’
