Why I Write by George Orwell is the first essay in the Collection which sits in the 917th spot on The Greatest Books of All Time site, where Homage To Catalonia is 431st, Animal Farm is 54th and Nineteen Eighty Four is 6th on the same list – these and more than five other works, books and movies, are reviewed on my blogs, if you are curious https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/02/is-this-unique-could-it-make-money.html

Geroge Orwell is best known for Nineteen Eighty-Four https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/12/nineteen-eighty-four-by-george-orwell.html and Animal Farm

Nevertheless, the introduction to The Essays argues that people might read in the future his essays and the other books might be forgotten, critics have apparently attacked the novels and one says Orwell is one of the greatest essayists

It seemed to me that George Orwell was the quintessential political writer, Animal Farm https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2024/08/animal-farm-by-george-orwell-one-of.html is such an accurate depiction of totalitarian societies – especially the one we lived in, that was under Ceausescu and you have a link at the end

What we get from the introduction is the various ways you can understand the capital works of this luminary, they were using his works in dictatorships from Africa to Latin America, and then there is the humor

Someone has seen the humor – graveyard or dark – in what seem to be tragedies, exclusively, considering the torture and that bleak future, but we could use The Golden Mean of Aristotle, maybe the truth is in the middle

Geroge Orwell gives four main reasons for writing – he started as a child, his mother would take his dictation when he was four, and there was this poem about a tiger with ‘chair like teeth’ or something like that

The author admits that it was probably taken from William Blake – the fourth reason would “Writers often aim to influence societal values and beliefs, pushing for change or advocating for specific ideologies through their narratives.”

Homage to Catalonia https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/homage-to-catalonia-by-george-orwell.html is mentioned and how George Orwell wrote in it about some Trotskyites accused by Moscow on false pretenses

A friend told the author that he had made a mistake, without this passage about the victims, the book would have been great, as it is, it becomes journalism, or something like that, Geroge Orwell could not help himself

There is the issue of truth versus fiction, was The Hanging based on a real experience, what about Shooting an Elephant – by the way, it seems I will read and write about these in the next few days, stay tuned, or avoid this space, I am not sure which will be best – and the conclusion is ambiguous, his wide said:

‘Of course he shot the fucking elephant, he said so, didn’t he’ but then we have the case of HG Wells presented in here, did he meet the Martians https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/07/war-of-worlds-by-h-g-wells.html for his War of The Worlds?

Now for my standard closing of the note with a question, and invitation – I am on Goodreads as Realini Ionescu, at least for the moment, if I keep on expressing my views on Orange Woland aka TACO, it may be a short-lived presence

Also, maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/2025/02/is-this-unique-could-it-make-money.html – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the benefits from it, other than the exercise per se

There is also the small matter of working for AT&T – this huge company asked me to be its Representative for Romania and Bulgaria, on the Calling Card side, which meant sailing into the Black Sea wo meet the US Navy ships, travelling to Sofia, a lot of activity, using my mother’s two bedrooms flat as office and warehouse, all for the grand total of $250, raised after a lot of persuasion to the staggering $400…with retirement ahead, there are no benefits, nothing…it is a longer story, but if you can help get the mastodont to pay some dues, or have an idea how it can happen, let me know

As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/realini-in-newsweek-participant-in.html

Some favorite quotes from To The Hermitage and other works

‘Fiction is infinitely preferable to real life...As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the careless plot of reality...Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life…Its actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound…There are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions…Unlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed…What's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense…As random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find…Few stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author…’
