‘Past cure I am, now Reason is past care’…this line from a fabulous Shakespeare sonnet, one of my favorites, appears to summarize the short story by one of the world’s greatest writers and one that has had a tremendous impact on the life of the undersigned, transforming it when he has started reading intensely, at the age of sixteen, when Crime and Punishment has had such thundering effect http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/06/crime-and-punishment-by-fyodor.html critics have said that readers identify with the murderer, Raskolnikov, and envisage what would they do in the same circumstances, if they will take the same path, or resist the idea of becoming Napoleon, with the cost of human sacrifice involved…

 

For a long time, it looked like the Dostoevsky Effect – incidentally, it would be interesting to see if there is such a thing and what it would entail, after all, we have the Coolidge Effect, to mention just one, taking its name from the visit that the former president takes at a farm, where his wife is intrigued by a rooster, asking how many times is he climbing a hen, when told it is (what, more than a hundred per day maybe) a lot, she has the man tell this to the president, who in turn asks if it is always the same hen and when informed it is Always a different one, he also likes this information passed to the spouse…hence the Coolidge Effect, connected to the Honeymoon Effect – was a spectacularly positive one, but now that this Dream of a Ridiculous Man invites this reader to look with hindsight, perhaps the Dostoevsky Effect has not been altogether one with exclusively happy results…

Maybe it urged the under signed, as it did for almost all the audience, to try and contemplate a Napoleon like position into the future – which in positive psychology terms looks good, for we are primed to think of The Best Possible Future – and when we look back and listen to spouse and daughter, all there is to show for nearly fifty eight years of life is a Blank Slate – the book by Steven Pinker is wonderful http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-blank-slate-by-steven-pinker.html - nothing but loss and pain, and maybe Dostoevsky is to…blame, at least in part, for inviting such high expectations…
