Macbeth by William Shakespeare

Astonishing – 10 out of 10

It looks like these will be some personal notes and impressions on such a famous and popular play that it has

-          410, 028 ratings!!

-          And 5,274 reviews!!

This is just on goodreads and we can be sure that there are millions more out there that have read this magnificent play.

In the first place, before I forget or change my mind while writing this, I must put down that I am aware of the majesty of Macbeth.

William Shakespeare is considered by many scholars to be the greatest writer of all time and for very reason.

At least his major plays- Hamlet, King Lear and Othello – have been ranked with the best masterpieces of mankind.

The others are absolute marvels, but I guess there are some who grumble, others who are not into old language.

As evidence of the popularity but also the different tastes of readers is the rating of only 3.86 given as an average.

Hundreds of thousands of readers think highly of Macbeth, but not enough for them all to put it near the five stars.

As above mentioned I will concentrate on my own experience rather than for the six thousandth time explain what happens.

Having said that, the plot is rather gruesome and dealing with a territory that is not my cup of usual tea.

Horror stories are avoided by this reader as a rule.

In other words, Macbeth is not my favorite play.

It is still ranked as 10 out of 10 since I am not foolish enough to rate anything written by Shakespeare with less than 10.

Besides taste and displeasure connected with one character or another, there is recognition of genius.

In fact I am happy to note here that even as a teenager I was impressed by Shakespeare’s plays, on a lower level.

I probably did not get the meaning of what was going on, or maybe just on the surface- these guys are fighting the villains.

But it was awesome to watch and hear the deep voices, the proud walks, the bravery of the kings-well, most of them.

I remember that for some time I took role models from these plays- again, if not aspiring to the highest values, at least in a superficial form.

I started walking with more pride, trying to be more like some of the knights in the BBC plays which were then on TV.

In the adaptation that I heard again this morning, Victor Rebengiuc plays the lead role with gusto – he is the best actor alive in my country, probably on a level with the best elsewhere.

The weird fact that actors avoid mentioning the name of the “Scottish play” is still unexplained to me- I may have read something about it, but I forgot what the curse is.

I have been reading psychology for the last couple of years and I learned that there is even a “Lady Macbeth syndrome”
