Caligula by Albert Camus, a production of the theater in…Baia Mare
6 out of 10, albeit this refers to the performance I have seen – well, as long as I could stand it – last night and not the play per se
Although I have seen this play many years ago and even noted down some impressions on the second time that I had the chance to watch it on television - http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/01/caligula-by-albert-camus.html - I had looked forward to seeing at least some of it again, as it was scheduled in a good slot – five minutes past eight – last evening, only to be first surprised and mildly disappointed to find it is not going to be the National Theater, or some other prestigious institution with a new look, but only some obscure company form…Baia Mare – I had had no idea they have a theater, never mind the ambitions I was about to witness…
From here there must be an alert – not spoiler alert, for we know that Caligula has died, many years ago, only to be reincarnated in the ‘most militaristic’ – he says so, in his catastrophic, regular manner – leader of America, once the role model democracy, but these days a would be tyranny, if you listen to the Idiot and his followers, most of whom have many guns and do pose an existential thereat to that country and its liberty –man to have been in office in the White House or in the bunker there – there is yet another controversy, after the ultimate pagan went to take a photo op and they gassed and attacked peaceful protests for the Devil to keep the book in hand, that involves his being taken into the bunker, which the pathological liar now claims he was ‘just inspecting’ fearing he would look weak, something this thug hates most…
So the alert is about digression, which you can see prevents the undersigned from dealing with the alleged subject of the note, and the fact that there is a note more or less about the Albert Camus opus per se, but this one deals more with what I have seen last night and perhaps very thinly related issues, such as modern views of this or another play and the results, plus what has happened to me at…the sauna – not very relevant, hence you would be better off abandoning this thing here, if you had not done it before…
The performance of last night was almost - if not a complete – a disaster and that was because they probably struggled too much – ‘Hell is paved with good intentions’ Shakespeare – and the means they have are quite feeble…in order to get a hoped for dazzling adaptation, they tried to be bold, one actor is naked within the first minute or let us say the first five minutes of the performance- let me be clear, that is not bad, it is not anything in of itself, when Andrei Serban _ he comes at the aforementioned sauna, by the way, or used to, before the pandemic, who knows what will happen from now on – put on a production of Medea by Euripides and The Trilogy, as he came back to his home country – maybe it is just the country of origin – that was outstanding, divine, mesmerizing and glorious…with naked people
There is also the question of how to act, exposed if I am not mistaken by Diderot, some centuries ago, when discussing what is best…to act with ‘passion, get into the role with fervor and more’ or to ‘Think, act rationally, invest not so much if any emotion, but a cool head’ - there is much more about this, but to return to the Baia Mare company, they took the route of Emotion and it failed rather badly…
The actor who plays Caligula is making an overwhelming effort, he sweats literally and figuratively, he is red in the face from what we could see, but the effect is not that of transmitting the feelings, thoughts of the play, but more something close to pity for the quite useless game that does not end with enjoyment, or even the horror of watching the ultimate monster, for he is covered underneath a strange activity…
There is a video supplement to this, as if you have not had enough with these lines…but there is within it the anecdote with the sauna, mentioned earlier, but not spelled out here for it has expletives – and I am such a decent man – and it would be redundant, since it is here already:
