The Stoics were on to something, if we take their doctrine (more) seriously, we could even save the planet, for they proselytized frugality and seeing as consumerism is causing huge problems (perhaps the demise of humanity) then Seneca and all could offer the way out…I was reading in The Economist (I think it was there) about some backlash against Barbie from…the environmentalists, because the sales of the doll will increase exponentially, and it is made of plastic, Greta Gerwin might have satire in mind – I have not yet seen the phenomenon, but live everyone else I am aware of the huge success, it is the first film with a female director to pass over one billion dollars at the box office and the biggest hit of the year
You see that we are already off subject, and not just that, but we are venturing into territory that should not matter (well, not that much) for the most important currency we have is time, if we were more careful with it, then we would see that life is not short – at least Seneca argued that it is just as long as it needs to be, if only we would take care – we have to find ways to extend it, and live in the moment
Apart from the wisdom of Seneca and reading this book, you could do well to take on Ikigai http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/ikigai-byhector-garcia-and-francesc.html which is written by scientists that have looked at the Japanese secrets regarding the Shortness of life, for on Okinawa, we have the largest number of people that are old and very old, mature is the word used nowadays, but then we have many nonagenarians and centenarians, that have all respected rules of diet and life style
They never eat until they are full, using a wide variety of vegetables and fruits, mostly a special kind of violet potato, with meat used rarely in the menu, they keep active, apparently, for the Japanese, there is no word for retirement, since they never stop, even if the exercise is milder, especially with age, the elderly work in the garden, and they do not think that once they finish their daily employment, they need to sit on the sofa…they also keep in touch with friends, socializing is vital and helps us survive
Indeed, studies have shown that the ones that live in isolation are the most exposed, their risk of dying is twice that of smokers – solitude appears to be twice as deadly as smoking – and we could also add that positivity is fundamental – Positivity http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/05/positivity-by-barbara-fredrickson-life.html is a classic of psychology by Barbara Fredrickson and you find the main ingredients there
These are awe, interest, amusement, inspiration, Pride, hope, joy, gratitude, love and serenity – we could think of Seinfeld http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/10/stand-up-by-jerry-seinfeld.html and Frank Constanza, who shouted at Elaine at the end of one memorable episode ‘Serenity Now – love is presumably the crowning element, if it does exist, and a personage from Thomas Mann is not correct in his assumptions
That personage was aghast http://realini.blogspot.com/2021/09/the-magic-mountain-is-classic-that.html hearing many folks complain about ‘their love was so great that there were no words to describe it’, when actually, the word is so massive that we can only find love in art, literature, in real life, when we test that ‘huge adoration’, it is not up to the standard…indeed, it is so much used it means just liking
Magister Ludi Kingsley Amis
http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/07/the-kings-english-guide-to-modern-usage.html has written more than twenty five masterpieces, and one is The King’s English, in which he looks at many words that have changed their significance, to the point where they cannot be used, such as infamous, which comes from infamy, but the way it is (or was at the time when Magician Kingsley Amis was writing) used it actually means famous, it is also true that we can be sure that most humans do not know what they are talking about anyway…
in The Shortness of Life, Seneca has some amusing, and also wrong takes, such as complaining that many ‘waste time’ with…literature, wondering who cares how many oars Ulysses’ ship had, and what was first, The Odyssey http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-odyssey-by-homer-from-positive.html or The Iliad
incidentally, Alberto Moravia has an astonishing perspective on The Odyssey in his magnum opus http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/02/contempt-aka-le-mepris-by-alberto.html Contempt, where he demonstrates that Ulysses did not want to return to Penelope, this is why he spends so many years away from home, returning from the siege of Troy, but only after procrastinating and fighting with Cyclops and others
‘Happiness Activity No 9: Savoring Life’s Joys-paying close attention, taking delight in life’s momentary pleasures and wonders, through thinking, writing, drawing or sharing with another’ as suggested by Sonja Lyubomirsky http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-how-of-happiness-by-sonja.html in her chef d’oeuvre The How of Happiness – we could conclude that even if the life were short, at least we would be happy.
Finally, Einstein said that ‘if you sit with a beautiful girl for one hour, it feels like one minute, but if you keep your hand on a hot stove for one minute, it seems like one hour, this is relativity’ and we could apply it to our life, and make it long on happiness, and short on pain, at least as much as we can…
Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/unique-in-world.html?q=unique+in+the+world – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se
As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/realini-in-newsweek-participant-in.html
