The Professor’s House is just one of four oeuvres that Willa Cather has on The List of 1,000 Novels Everyone Must Read, the others are the aforementioned One of Ours http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/08/note-on-one-of-ours-by-willa-cather.html My Antonia and A Lost Lady.
This novel is available free of charge on the Librivox site https://librivox.org/ together with thousands of masterpieces, opera of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Jane Austen and a multitude of other writers, whose books are older than seventy years, and thus have gone passed the limit for copyright laws, in most situations…
A middle aged reader would find it easy to relate, even identity with Professor Godfrey St. Peter, although we are talking of a different age, and issues, problems change with time, there are aspects that remain unchanged, such as what is called ‘midlife crisis’, the challenges brought by children moving…
Stumbling On Happiness http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/06/stumbling-on-happiness-by-david-gilbert.html by Harvard Professor Daniel Gilbert is a classic of psychology that sheds light on some of what happens to The Professor
There are some myths of happiness that are exposed in Stumbling On Happiness, such as if we were to move to California, we would be so happy, when in fact, The Hedonic Adaptation phenomenon interferes…

Professor Godfrey St. Peter has two daughter, the elder, Rosamund, marries Louie Marsellus, the latter appears to be something of a parvenu, seeing that he gains access to a fortune, without any merit.
Indeed, a conflict ensues when the opulence gets to irritate people and claims are made to the inheritance – Rosamund had been engaged to Tom Outland, and when the fiancée died, she becomes wealthy.
However, Tom Outland has made a discovery that would bring about this fortune, and the wife of the man that had helped Outland comes to Professor St. Peter to demand that they get a share of the wealth.
The Professor explains that albeit he had been Outland’s teacher, he has not received anything from the inheritance and will not benefit in any way, it is only his daughter that had been listed in the will as beneficiary.
More tension is created when the mansion in which Rosamund and Louie Marsellus move is called…Outland, presumably to honor the inventor and creator of the abundance that is displayed now
The opulence and the context in which a stranger, Louie Marsellus, benefits from the work of Tom Outland, who had his experiments guided and corrected by someone else, someone who gets nothing is irritated…
Tom Outland has a large part of the narrative to himself, but I must confess that I did not pay much, if any attention – it was a change from what I thought is the main story, and when it proved more than a distraction, it was too late.
The secret is to engage in activities such as ‘Happiness Activity No 8: Increasing FLOW Experiences-increasing the number of experiences at home and working which you LOSE YOURSELF, which are challenging, absorbing’
This rule and others are presented in the august The How of Happiness http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-how-of-happiness-by-sonja.html by Sonja Lyubomirsky and reading The Professor’s House stopped being a Flow experience with Tom Outland’s story, when I lost the thread
More about Flow http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/10/flow-by-mihaly-csikszentmihalyi-this-is.html you find in another classic, Flow http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/10/flow-by-mihaly-csikszentmihalyi-this-is.html by the co-founder of Positive Psychology, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the other founder is Martin Seligman
Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/unique-in-world.html?q=unique+in+the+world – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se
As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/realini-in-newsweek-participant-in.html
