Malcolm Gladwell might be the most influential psychologist of our (or your) times, if it is not Daniel Kahneman, winner of the Nobel Prize (for economy, there is no such award for psychology, and incidentally, i think i have read smewhere that Einstein was against giving the Nobel to Freud, or this could just be made up, easy to check though, ask the Artificial Intelligence assisatnt) who gave us the magesterial Thinking Fast and Slow http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/07/thinking-fast-and-slow-by-daniel.html

This reader keeps quoting from Outliers and Blink- The Power of Thinking Without Thinking http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/05/blink-power-of-thinking-without.html indeed, yesterday (like on most other days) i mentioned The Thin Slicing Theory in the...sauna of the Caro World Class – yes we do have a network here, coming all the way from Sweden originally (now there are conspiracy theories revolving aroun which country gave us the new owners of the franchise, seemigly South Africa, Poland and others might be in the game) with a preposterous name, conisdering the rather shabby level of service and infrastructure

Malcolm Gladwell has his critics (of course he does, he is so succesful popular, well read, personable, so envy has to set in for those who miss on some or all of those aspects) and there are trade offs, one could not release a book that is purely acadamic in style, approach, charts and all, and see it bringing readers to a frenzy, so he had to adopt a ‚popular style’, make it accesible for the likes of me and presumably you too...

The priniciple explianed in Blink has a solid pre-historic evidence, our ancestors had to use what is called the ‚Fight or Flight Pinciple’ whereby the ones who have been dreamers, mediative types could not pass on their genes, there has (always ) been a world where you had to decide in the Blink of an Eye (and Without Thinking too much, or at all) or else you would be eaten, or still deadly, you would get no food

From around 1985 to about 2002 i had been in the Hospitality Business (as it is called today, we we were doing tours then) and somehow i came to the conclusion tjhat becasue of this experience, having to welcome and take around some thousands of visitors, perhaps it is just over one thouand, but you see the point, i came to the point where in a second, i would form an opinion and say this guy will be trouble, or the opposite

In fact, it was The Thin Slicing Theory in action, studies have had participants look at about a minute (this is what it seems like in my memory at least) of a video with a man saying something, then they reduced this to just a couple of seconds (same thing with the recalling of the right figure, but you get the idea, and you could check on the net, better still, go ahead and read Malcolm Gladwell, or at the very least, look for some material on YouTube, or elswehere with and about him) and told these folks to rate what they saw

Another group in the study have been with the professor (the rated individual was a professor, maybe still is) for a semester, then they put down their opinions and what do you think, when they compared what one group had down versus the other...well, what you say after two seconds, seems to match what you feel after a few months, we do do not take another view, keep to initial conclusion, even when it is wrong.

Indeed, Malcolm Gladwell does metnion tragic, even catastophic events where the result of an instaneous call proves disastrous, such as the Vincennes aircraft crarrier, that had had an airplane coming towards it, some decades back, they signaled, then tried again, but when time was running out, the captain of the ship took the decision to send a miisile and that snet the plane into the waters of the sea.

It was a commercial airline and hundreds of passaners died in the crash, due to a decision that was taken in a short time, but there are multiple other instances wherein lives are saved, and we are taken to the Chicago hospital where they pioneered a new, quick procedure whereby they separated fast the patinets that could have serious problems that needed etreme measures and instantly, from the ones that were cronic, had soemthing wrong, but could wait for more tests, further analysis and diagnosis...

At the top of the business, political (and come to think of it, probably any other) world decisons are almost immediate, and the book is mesmerizing when it takes readers to the Top 500 Fortune companies, where the CEOs are almost all white, male (though this may be changing slowly) and unexpectedly, very tall

This figure has to be veruified, but one third or thereabouts of the leaders are about 190 centimeters tall at the very peak, while in the population at large, they represent just three percent or near, soemthing that demonstartes that Thin Slicing is routeniley (maybe always) used, for if those tall guys have excellent credentials, then so do the others, that are musch shorter, it is a question of what the baord sees wehn they walk into the room

The Harding Effect comes from the American presdient Harding, which Malcolm Gladwell says that he was the worst that country had, only this is written before the calamitous Trump era, soemthing unbeliveable, if you told me before 2016 that this could happen, i would have said that this is absurd and belongs to the comedy domain (just like that movie, Idiocracy, if democarcy comes from Greek, the power of the people, then Trump, MTG and the others represent Idiocracy, power to the idiots) alas, it happened and could be repeated next year...

Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/unique-in-world.html?q=unique+in+the+world  – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/realini-in-newsweek-participant-in.html

From To The Heritage:

‘Fiction is infinitely preferable to real life...As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the careless plot of reality...Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life…Its actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound…There are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions…Unlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed…What's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense…As random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find…Few stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author…’

‚parturiunt montes, nascetur ridiculus mus’

“the Meaning of Life...Well, it's nothing very special. Try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.”
